Best products/routine for oily skin?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you can help me, F!S

I have very oily skin. Visible acne & blackheads all the time. My makeup often looks shiny and just seems to "slide" off my face by the end of the day - I try to avoid wearing foundation at all, tbh, because the wrong type usually makes my acne worse.

There's so much bullshit with beauty products, cleansing routines etcetera and so many people trying to sell me shit, and I'm sick and tired of it.

I just recently learned that apparently toners that use astringents like alcohol and witch hazel actually make acne WORSE and now I'm pissed b/c these are often marketed specifically for oily skin.

So, yeah, idk. I want to start taking better care of my skin, but I want to do it PROPERLY, and I don't want to waste my money.

Tips? Information? What beauty routine do you use?

I use Mary Kay's 3 in 1 cleanser for normal to oily skin. It is pretty much the only thing that has ever helped my acne, and I'm not willing to try the prescription stuff. As long as I keep using it every day, it keeps things mostly normal, though if I miss a day I usually end up getting a breakout at some point after.

Thanks for that! I've never heard of that brand, actually. For reference, I'm Australian.

Oh. It is a US thing, I think? They are this whole brand thing where they come to your house. They are kind of overpriced, but it is the only thing that has ever worked for me so I deal with it.

Have you tried using moisturizer?

Re: Best products/routine for oily skin?

I sometimes use loreal moisturizer with SPF 30+. my skin doesn't really seem to need moisturizer though; i'm really using it more as a less greasy version of sunscreen.

The one thing that's worked best for me is the tea tree line from The Body Shop. The toner has witch hazel in it, but I've never really had any problems with it. In fact I'm more likely to break out if I don't use it. They do have a toner for combination skin that is alcohol and witch hazel free, which is certainly worth a try. I do miss their cucumber water toner, which was also alcohol free and felt wonderful. Before trying The Body Shop line, I was switching cleansers on an annual basis. I've been using this routine for six years, and this is the most in control I've bee of my acne in years. That said, I did have a facial done at the Aveda Institute, and I got the full load of oily skin products during that experience. I didn't use them long term after that, but I did noticed that the products were gentle but still pretty good and preventing blemishes down the road.

I've also found that when I feel compelled to wear makeup that mineral-based products tend to work best for me. The real kicker is using the right (amount of) primer to keep the foundation from sliding or cracking. I'm still struggling with that, so unfortunately I don't have any recommendations. I will say that if you go the mineral makeup route that stuff still expires and can bring on breakouts if you try to use it several years after you first buy it. If you're not going to use much, try getting a sample kit; the jars are smaller.

okay, maybe you can clear something up for me - is primer actually necessary?

i've always side-eyed it as yet another unnecessary thing, like how people advertise eye moisturizers when you can just use face moisturizers.

i did try using primer once - it came with a mineral makeup kit, i think it was nude minerals - and it gave me the worst acne ever so i just stopped using it.

AYRT

The primer may not have been formulated for oily skin, hence the acne. I swapped out the primer in my sample kit for a different one made for oily skin, and it has helped. I've noticed that primer helps my makeup stay on longer and smudge less. Also, if I by accident I scratch my nose, the primer keeps the makeup in place. It's been my experience that primer is good to have, especially if I don't feel like carrying stuff around for touch ups. That said, I don't know if it's necessary in most cases. It's a definite if you are going to wear makeup while in really hot/humid conditions for extended amounts of time (like I was when I got married).

Let me preface this by saying I'm glad the Body Shop's tea tree line works well for you - but oh my god I have a visceral reaction of horror and disgust when I hear that line mentioned. I used to have mild acne problems and tried it out on myself.

It made my acne ten times worse. Not even an exaggeration - my T-zone was suddenly covered in zits where I used to get sporadic light breakouts. I stopped using it as soon as I realised that was the problem, and the acne stopped worsening - but it didn't get better. Wound up having to get chemical peels and laser treatment to undo the damage it did, and I still have some scarring and dark patches from it.

Nowadays I don't even step into the Body Shop anymore. >_< I'm also super careful with any new products I use - I watch my skin like a hawk for the first week at least. The test patch I did with the Body Shop stuff didn't show any negative reactions, so now I'm just extra paranoid with keeping an eye on how my skin deals with new products =P

I use stuff from this brand:

http://www.makeupartistschoice.com/

They have a code right now ("launch", all lowercase, until 11:59 pm Eastern time tomorrow) for 25% off the entire site. And even if you don't order before then they have a 20% off code pretty much all the time (the code changes, but it'll be listed in the far right of the bar across the top of the page). They have samples of most of the stuff so you can try it without spending too much money.

You might want to check out this category:

http://www.makeupartistschoice.com/Acneic-Oily-Skin_c_50.html

I've used the Radiance Peel (http://www.makeupartistschoice.com/MUAC-Radiance-Peel--80-Organic-Content_p_168.html), Mandelic Acid Toner (http://www.makeupartistschoice.com/Mandelic-Acid-Toner_p_132.html), and Mandelic Acid Serum (http://www.makeupartistschoice.com/Mandelic-Acid-Serum--10-Concentration_p_257.html) and they're all awesome. (Everything I've tried from them has been great, honestly, those are just my favorites at the moment.) And the new PhytX Peel (http://www.makeupartistschoice.com/PhytX-Peel_p_292.html) sounds pretty good too but I haven't tried it yet since it just came out.

There's a page of before and after pics/testimonials (http://makeupartistschoice.blogspot.com/) and there are reviews on the individual product pages if you're curious. You can also email them and describe what your skin is like and they'll recommend specific products.

I don't mean to sound like an ad or anything (and no, I don't work for them lol) but their stuff is seriously awesome and my skin has never looked better since I discovered them. I have large pores/blackheads and the Radiance Peel and Mandelic Acid products I linked above have helped SO much.

One thing to remember is that you can't just strip out moisture/oil without some sort of replacement; if you use really strong astringents and no moisturizer, your skin goes "OH NO A DESERT I AM DRYIGN OUT SAVE ME" and overcompensates by producing more oil. I have found it very helpful to get on a daily routine of cleanse/tone/moisturize; at the beginning it doesn't seem to do much, but once your skin acclimatizes it gets better. I'd say give it a try of at least a couple of weeks to see how you adjust!

DO you have a recommendation for a moisturizer for oily skin and affordable? I have had trouble with finding a good one that doesn't make my skin more oily that isn't super expensive.

what she said. i'd love to find some budget stuff. i've heard clinique's city block SPF is pretty good, light & non-greasy... buuuut it's $36 in australia, so, idk.

I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer. It's like $10 a bottle, but it lasts me a really long time. I use the type for combination skin, but all the varieties are pretty lightweight and nice.

Well, I got kind of hooked on Korean products. You can get them pretty affordably on gmarket (unless your country kills ya on shipping etc), and the 'beauty calendar' shows when certain brands are on sale:

http://gpromotion.gmarket.co.kr/Plan/PlanView?sid=121689

I like Innisfree and The Face Shop brands; you can look for something that says 'watery cream' or 'gel' instead of 'butter' or 'cream' if you're worried about it being heavy; and you can also get something like a 'moisturizing essence': these you basically rub a bit in your hands and pat it over your face like it's rosewater or some shit. Very light.

http://item2.gmarket.co.kr/English/detailview/item.aspx?goodscode=299178220

I use the 'balancing lotion' and find it to be quite good (http://item2.gmarket.co.kr/English/detailview/item.aspx?goodscode=509660936) and if you want a whole set there's often a discount (http://item2.gmarket.co.kr/English/detailview/item.aspx?goodscode=541312013) so that would have the full regimin--essence, moisturizer, toner, eye cream.

You said above that you use Mary Kay cleanser. I use that and the Mary Kay moisturizer and it works wonders for me. As with the cleanser, it is kinda expensive, but it lasts awhile as you don't use all that much.

if you're using a lot of stuff to combat oil, it could be like the other anon said and your skin is overcompensating by producing even MORE oil (alcohol wipes are esp bad for this)

you may want to look into the "oil cleansing method" which cuts off this process by re-oiling your skin safely so it doesn't feel the need to produce more oil

only do the ocm every other week. if you do it daily, it'll work for the first month or so and then you'll get the worst acne of your life.

I was never terribly successful at controlling my own skin issues before I more or less outgrew them, but one thing I do remember seemed to help was switching frequently between several different types of soaps or cleansers rather than using the same one daily. It was like if I stuck with any one product for more than a day or two, my skin would acclimatize to it and the problems would come right back.

Natural products, and gentle on the skin - doesn't strip your skin of all its oils, which as other people have mentioned, can worsen oiliness. It's especially formulated for people who have sensitive skin and various skin issues - they've got a Balancing System for oily skin that you might want to try out (or just try the cleanser/moisturiser to start with and see if you like it): http://www.skinnaturale.com/collections/me-by-skin-naturale/products/balancing-system-oily-combination-skin

It's an Australian brand, so you should be able to get it fairly easily, I hope? I believe this is a list of places that stock it (look for the me. range; that's the facial stuff): http://www.skinnaturale.com/blogs/stockists You might be able to get testers there, if you want to try a sample before committing.

So...I don't know if this will help you, I tend to have combination skin (oily forehead/nose, dry cheeks). My acne is moderate/not terrible.

What I do: I wash my face at night, with a glycerin bar of soap (it doesn't have to be anything expensive. I pay 67 cents for my soap; the fewer ingredients better). I then let my face air dry/while it's still a little damp I apply olive oil (or coconut oil if I don't have olive, coconut worked well for a friend of mine with oily skin).

Once or twice a month, I wash my face with warm water, make a paste of sorts with brown sugar (or any sugar really) and honey (the paste is granulated). I apply this to my face, let it rock for a bit, and rinse it off. Then I take an ice cube and rub it over my face.

I know it seems very...'old wives' tales" but, it's been working for me, maybe it can work for you!

Also, keep drinking water and use warm to cool water to wash your face (unless you're trying to remove blackheads. I've heard steaming your face opens up pores. A friend of mine uses St. Ive's apricot blackhead scrub).

I've heard that cleansing with oil helps oily skin. So for instance you put a skin friendly oil such as jojoba on a cotton pad and gently wipe it over your face. I know that sounds counterintuitive, but apparently it works.
