Re: Best products/routine for oily skin?

The one thing that's worked best for me is the tea tree line from The Body Shop. The toner has witch hazel in it, but I've never really had any problems with it. In fact I'm more likely to break out if I don't use it. They do have a toner for combination skin that is alcohol and witch hazel free, which is certainly worth a try. I do miss their cucumber water toner, which was also alcohol free and felt wonderful. Before trying The Body Shop line, I was switching cleansers on an annual basis. I've been using this routine for six years, and this is the most in control I've bee of my acne in years. That said, I did have a facial done at the Aveda Institute, and I got the full load of oily skin products during that experience. I didn't use them long term after that, but I did noticed that the products were gentle but still pretty good and preventing blemishes down the road.

I've also found that when I feel compelled to wear makeup that mineral-based products tend to work best for me. The real kicker is using the right (amount of) primer to keep the foundation from sliding or cracking. I'm still struggling with that, so unfortunately I don't have any recommendations. I will say that if you go the mineral makeup route that stuff still expires and can bring on breakouts if you try to use it several years after you first buy it. If you're not going to use much, try getting a sample kit; the jars are smaller.

okay, maybe you can clear something up for me - is primer actually necessary?

i've always side-eyed it as yet another unnecessary thing, like how people advertise eye moisturizers when you can just use face moisturizers.

i did try using primer once - it came with a mineral makeup kit, i think it was nude minerals - and it gave me the worst acne ever so i just stopped using it.

The primer may not have been formulated for oily skin, hence the acne. I swapped out the primer in my sample kit for a different one made for oily skin, and it has helped. I've noticed that primer helps my makeup stay on longer and smudge less. Also, if I by accident I scratch my nose, the primer keeps the makeup in place. It's been my experience that primer is good to have, especially if I don't feel like carrying stuff around for touch ups. That said, I don't know if it's necessary in most cases. It's a definite if you are going to wear makeup while in really hot/humid conditions for extended amounts of time (like I was when I got married).

Let me preface this by saying I'm glad the Body Shop's tea tree line works well for you - but oh my god I have a visceral reaction of horror and disgust when I hear that line mentioned. I used to have mild acne problems and tried it out on myself.

It made my acne ten times worse. Not even an exaggeration - my T-zone was suddenly covered in zits where I used to get sporadic light breakouts. I stopped using it as soon as I realised that was the problem, and the acne stopped worsening - but it didn't get better. Wound up having to get chemical peels and laser treatment to undo the damage it did, and I still have some scarring and dark patches from it.

Nowadays I don't even step into the Body Shop anymore. >_< I'm also super careful with any new products I use - I watch my skin like a hawk for the first week at least. The test patch I did with the Body Shop stuff didn't show any negative reactions, so now I'm just extra paranoid with keeping an eye on how my skin deals with new products =P
