No worries, herpy, I'll never begrudge the sharing of information. :) The people I think of as "judgmental" are the ones who make assumptions and actively give women shit (and they can get pretty nasty about it), as well as the folks who treat women who can't breastfeed as if they're freaks.

In any case, part of the reason for me saying what I did is that I'd recently come across some studies whose results posed a bit of a challenge. One of them found that, when one controls for socioeconomic factors, almost all of the apparent protective benefits of breastfeeding disappear (IIRC, the only benefit that seemed to hold related to rates of asthma). Another found that breastfeeding conferred substantially greater benefits when compared to formula based on cow's milk, but not when compared to other types of formula.

It's a bit of a moot point, anyway, because I plan to breastfeed if I'm able. But if, for some reason, I'm not able to, I don't intend to let anyone make me feel lesser for it.

THANK YOU. I am keeping this in mind for later. Maybe it can be a present to myself when I move. Because this game looks like buckets of fun, and exactly the type I like!

I will have to look, but if I find any, I will post it here!

ugh, that sucks.

Keller/Sam was good. I was also fond of Keller/Teyla.

I was more laughing at the notion that Snape would ever willingly or productively help Harry through anything, even killing Voldemort, at least in any more of a hands-on way than his behind-the-scenes help in Deathly Hallows, which was managed fine with Snape dying.

We saw how well direct-contact 'guidance' worked between them with the Occlumency lessons in book 5, productivity was not the result. So it seems weird to believe Rowling killed him off so Harry would have no adults to guide him through killing Voldemort. Snape would never have been the adult to provide this guidance even if he'd lived. I'm not convinced the only reason he was able to do so by dying isn't because that's the only way he would give Harry a real reason to trust him by handing over the full truth of everything. I'm not sure an alive Snape wouldn't have just been all, "The only way Voldemort can die is if you let him kill you first. Off to it, then, go!"

I wouldn't dream of lecturing someone for something they might not be able to control, but I do think people should be aware that one is a better option than the other. However, I also understand that it can be a sensitive issue and that there's a definite tendency for parents to criticize other parents in ways that are completely reprehensible, though. This extends to all parenting decisions, but people get particularly rabid about choices regarding health in infancy (eg. breast feeding, circumcision).

If you ever want a more neutral perspective based in science, that's what I usually try to provide for people. I try to stay up to date on most studies... allergy precautions, for example, have changed drastically in the past five years- whereas physicians used to believe that in order to prevent a child from developing peanut allergies one should withhold products containing peanuts until later in development, there is now information that suggests the opposite is true, and that withholding peanuts increases the likelihood of developing allergies.

But I'm not a parent, so I suppose that takes the personal investment part of it out of the equation.

Glad you were able to get your medication for so cheap, by the way!

This is the awkward part. We met at a funeral, but there is a great deal of attraction between us. I like him a lot, but now I worry if this will go anywhere. First world dating problems!

I think the worst that can happen is that someone reads the books and nitpicks through them, pulling out every trope they can find, including unflattering ones.

However if that happened, I'd say those authors should - if they saw the TV Tropes pages - take it as a critical analysis and see what tropes they are inclined to use and decide whether they want to use those tropes again (remember, there's even a page titled "Tropes Are Not Bad" and one titled "Tropes Are Tools").

I have come around to the idea that gender roles in the Qun are just as decided as jobs are - if someone who is physically male is determined to be best for a woman's role, he will live his whole life as a "Woman" no matter what is between his legs. It manages to be both strict in roles in Qunari society and also allow transgender to exist.

It also creates the potential for interesting problems if someone is given a role opposite of their sex and they happen to be cis.

I saw a little bit of the thing about Iron Bull because a writer mentioned it on their fic, but it was still in the messy "problematic" dub-con area at that point.

I haven't heard what's been said about Sera, but I'm not on Tumblr and only go to look at DA Confessions, which has some good mods filtering the submissions.

I haven't romanced Sera; can you go into a little more detail about her being abusive?

Ice packs and hammocks

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
This is probably going to sound completely idiotic, but what the hell, it's anonymous.

The vent is in the ceiling, right? So, make a tiny little "hammock" that hangs, say, 3 to 6 inches directly below the vent, then put an ice pack in it. (Not sure how you'd hang the hammock, depending on the kind of ceiling you have--maybe duct tape, maybe screw-in hooks.) That way, warm air immediately hits ice and doesn't heat the room as rapidly, especially if the windows are open. Change out the ice pack whenever it melts.

Also, indirectly related: if this roommate wants to be cooler when she sleeps, she can sew a soft washcloth into a pouch and slip an ice pack into it; then she just holds it like she would a stuffed animal.

And these, my friends, are things I learned from living in a second-floor apartment facing west with crappy insulation during one of the hottest summers my town has ever had.

Re: So... Manslamming

I find it really funny that this is being referred to as 'walking like a man', because I'm a woman and I've been walking like that my entire life (not slamming into people if I can help it - but walking very fast & purposefully usually means that most people get out of my way anyway).

Susan and Teatime from Hogfather.

Since a sweep is 2 and some change years, and we know karkat is the youngest troll, we can imagine Vriska as 15 years old. She can be two earth years older than karkat and they would still both be 6 sweeps.

Not much better but..slightly better.
