Things you always wanted to ask about certain things

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
We've had a thread about asking members things, so why not a more general thread on asking about various subjects? Countries, life situations, anything goes.

Meant to add you can either randomly ask or start a thread letting people ask.

Ask me your questions about Shakespeare/theatre/musicals. Or ask about theatre relating to whatever topic (recs).

Or maybe you have questions about living in Los Angeles. I can answer those too.

Not sure you can answer this, but how come quite a few Shakespeare remakes in modern settings have kept the original dialogue? I had a lot of reasons for disliking Romeo + Juliet, but the fact that they were speaking early modern English definitely threw me off from the start...

Okay, so, what, in your opinion is the best adaption of Macbeth? Are there good ones? I know there are a lot more versions of Hamlet, but Macbeth has always been my favorite Shakespeare play.

What's the deal with getting horribly itchy hives after I go on walks?

Am I literally allergic to exercise?

Somebody more sciencey/mediciney, please explain.

Are you sure it's hives and not heat rash?

In my family, we have an allergy to our sweat. My dad, me, and sometimes my brother all break out after we sweat (nothing like hives but its itchy and stuff). It can happen when we exercise indoors but it happens more when the sun is involved too. No idea why but maybe it could be that?

It depends. Do you get itchy and covered in hives when you wear a certain pair of pants? If so, it's probably contact dermatitis.

If you simply get itchy whenever you sweat (or engage in moderate to intense exercise), it's probably a condition called heat rash or prickly heat. The good news is, if it's this it usually tends subside as you exercise more.

If you go onwalk in nature, ou might be allergic to something in that environment.

Could be sweat allergy as mentioned OR if you get really hot, it could be hives from the heat. My best friend gets them a lot in the summer.

I see lots of explanations for hives appearing after walks in hot weather. OTOH, nobody has ever explained the huge wheals that popped up all over my legs after I walked home in a hip-length parka one very cold night.

I've never known how to ask anyone this because it's really weird.

There is a smell that I frequently smell in public bathrooms. Without being too gross, it's not one of the smells that you would usually associate with bathrooms but it's definitely very...distinct, and I can't remember ever smelling it in a context not related to public bathrooms. I guess it could be a certain type of industrial cleaner or something but it doesn't smell like a cleaner, though I can't really describe what it DOES smell like.

Does anyone have any idea what smell I'm talking about or what it is?

Men's bathroom or women's bathroom?

Is it a kind of 'sharp' smell nonnie? Because I smell that all the time in public bathrooms, I presume it's an industrial strength cleaner of some-kind.

I know the answer to this!

It's a cleaning product called Simple Green (http://simplegreen.com/).

I bought it once because a friend told me that it is an amaaaaazing cleaner. I have to admit that it is. However, the smell was so reminiscent of public restrooms that I wound up giving the bottle to my mother after only using it three times. The smell made me gag.

Probably crotch.

I've always wondered how people cope when they're born into strict religious families, and they're gay, bi or trans or even just fall in love with someone outside the religious or otherwise fall outside their family's traditions. I've heard stories about people who escaped and stuff, but beyond those stories, how do people deal?

I mean, I had a friend in college - college - whose dad called her while we were hanging out, and she had to promise him I was a girl. I can only imagine what would've happened had she actually "broken" a rule. (she didn't live on campus.)

I've read about people who straight-up didn't realize that all men weren't attracted to other men. They just thought everyone hid it. And it's a similar rhetoric that you see from a few (not the majority) of opponents of gay marriage - they just assume that if there's gay marriage, all dudes will want to fuck dudes and fall apart, and it makes sense to them because they want to fuck dudes.

So there are some people who just force themselves to live within it. People are kind of incredibly adaptable.

:raises hand:

My family is fairly religiously conservative (though surprisingly not so much in a lot of areas) and fairy homophobic.

Honestly, I'm not out to them. Being bi and never having had either a boyfriend or girlfriend it hasn't needed to come up. Plus, they are still supporting me a bit, and I kind of need that money right now. I am out to my sister, though.

It is going to have to come up at some point, and I don't know what will happen. Because on the one hand particularly my dad is very homophobic but on the other hand I don't think they are the type of people to disown me.

Ask me about eh, whatever. My country, my travels, languages are options, but really I'm pretty open about things in general.

Enh, if people really want another multi/DID thread, I'm willing, but if not, that's great too.

Or you can just ask us about the OTHER stuff we did. Our comics, our con work, our writing, that time we saved a horse from lameness...

I'm worried this will be taken the wrong way, but if you don't believe in any chance of an afterlife, how do you deal with death? I have nothing against people who don't believe in an afterlife, I just wonder how it's looked at from that angle, when for me, I take comfort in believing my loved one is in a better place.

OK, here goes.

What is it like growing up with a sibling who is severely disabled? You always hear those stories from the parents' perspective, but rarely the sibling's.
