2nd comment because it's long.

A few years ago, someone in my fandom announced an Alphabet Soup fic challenge for the main character of said fandom. She'd already done challenges for the two most popular supporting characters, and they'd all been collated into their own alphabetical indexes.

I was really excited to give my favorite character some love (despite being the main character, he could get mocked quite a bit, and the actor had some particularly determined haters), so I claimed several letters, posted the fic on the due date, and waited for the other stories to come in. I wanted to read all the fics in one go after the index had been posted.

Twenty fics were posted, and then things just...stopped. At first, I thought it was a "real life comes first" situation, and we'd get the index at a later date. But a year later, I ran across a post by the challenge creator, who mentioned in an offhand way that she was no longer a part of that fandom. Needless to say, the index was never completed, and to this day, there are still four letters left unclaimed.

While it's not something I dwell on (it only comes to mind when I see hate for the character or actor, which has fortunately diminished as the years have gone on), I wish she'd stuck around long enough to see the challenge through, or at least handed it off to someone else when she realized she was drifting away from the fandom.

I guess I just wanted to vent about this and try to put it behind me for good.

What is an alphabet soup fic? I am potentially intrigued by the concept.

Basically, it's a challenge set around a particular fandom/character, where you/multiple people write stories or draw art that have a theme that fits every letter of the alphabet.

For example, there could be an Avengers Alphabet Soup challenge, with "A is for Assemble," "B is for Bucky," etc. Or it could be a Hawkeye Challenge, so instead it's "A is for Arrow," "B is for Broken," etc. It can be fun seeing what other people come up with.

That was my first thought.

Man, I had something similar happen. I signed up for the Tolkien Big Bang. The Big Bang got through the artist claim. It literally had nothing left but to assign a posting schedule and then let us post. But then the mod just disappeared and was never heard from again. She already did all the hard work (unless someone lost an artist at some point) so I don't understand what happened to her.

Now, there's a Hobbit Big Bang, which is nice and all but I have a lot of non-Hobbit Tolkien stuff I'd love to write for a Big Bang and to see others write. I was looking forward to the stories the authors in the Tolkien Big Bang were going to write. I've found a few by looking for the author directly but it would be so nice to have them in one place. I think some authors gave up. :(

Can you create a collection on AO3 and encourage people who have finished to post it there? I think anybody can make a collection.

When things like that happen I always wonder if they died?

Ugh, I hate it when this happens. It happened to my fandom during a week-long event once. A FUCKING WEEK. At that point finishing the event is just a matter of basic fucking courtesy towards all the people you involved in your plans, imo. All our mod had to do was check one lousy tumblr tag and hit reblog a couple of times, but even that was too fucking much to ask for. When I saw her "lolbye" post I asked her twice (politely, I wasn't angry yet at that point) if she would at least be collecting the event entries at the end of the week, but she couldn't even be assed to answer one fucking ask. UGH.
