The picture made me laugh because Bucky's posture reads "Oh! Look at the time!"

:D

Still giggling.

If it makes you feel any better, I've taught myself Cyrillic (I keep forgetting what I learned though, but I have most of the letters down) simply because of Half-Life 2 and the Stalker trilogy.

Would this help? I've been saving it in my tabs forever meaning to look over it more.

Cyrillic is great, and once you get it, it stays!

I took one semester of Russian as a senior in high school, and I didn't do anything with it for almost 20 years. I kept it. The thing that helped *me* and it might help you, too, is that I could write Russian. Now I can't type it for anything, but in class we learned how to hand write things. Spending time on my penmanship helped everything stick.

All I can think is that it's been too long since I've taught myself to write a random alphabet or syllabary. Used to be a hobby of mine and I miss it.

People put Cyrillic in the middle of random fanfics? Why?

idk if this helps at all, but I've had this sitting in my bookmarks for ages so I might as well share it:

http://twentytwowords.com/learn-to-read-russian-in-15-minutes-yes-for-real-i-thought-it-was-a-joke-at-first-too/

Haven't gotten around to really looking at it myself yet though, so can't say if it is a good guide or not.

The website Memrise is pretty good for learning stuff you just have to memorize, like vocabulary and letters in a foreign alphabet. I don't think you can really learn grammar in it, but it's helped me a lot with memorizing words and letters.

Here's one for the Cyrillic alphabet:

Honestly, as a Russian, I'm just excited whenever people are interested in my language, pretty much regardless of the reasons. It's incredibly cool and... IDK, heartwarming in a weird way.

Hey, I wholly approve of Bucky and Natasha inspiring you to learn a new skill-set!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-28 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
While it's great you're inspired to learn a new language, no matter the reason, I'm laughing at you thinking any Cyrillic you see in a fic will be remotely accurate. Mostly because no writer worth their salt would do that, which means you're reading badfic, which means the author won't have done due diligence and gotten a proper source, or if they're a native speaker, it won't be worth reading anyway, because as I said--badfic.

I'll never understand why some fics do this without [translation convention] or a footnote* key. It doesn't demean your bilingual/non-English-speaking character to simply imply they are speaking said language, whilst also NOT alienating your target audience.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-28 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Learning a language is always good, even if your reasons are dorky. I learned German largely because of my crush on a dude from Kraftwerk. It started sounding like the most adorable language in the world to me, so I had to learn it. It doesn't get much dorkier than that.

Go for it! I'm actually thinking about picking up some Romani language books because of Dick Grayson, so.

Image: Natasha and Bucky fighting

Text: Lately, I’ve been getting increasingly frustrated by my inability to read Cyrillic script decently. The reason? The Russian sentences in fanfic involving Natasha or Bucky. That’ s right, not cultural enrichment, but smut and violence are my motivators.

It’s even worse because I can *sort* of make it out, and I can even understand easy Russian sentences when spoken. It’s like almost being able to reach something, but not quite. I actually borrowed a book on Russian script now. For fanfic. I might have bad priorities in life.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-28 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, 90% of the time the "Russian" in these fics is basically google-translate.

This was me in the FFVII fandom. It didn't help that the people who could read, write, and understand Japanese were both clique-ish, felt superior to everyone else who couldn't AND wouldn't help you with translations. Not every person can be a super fan. I just wish that folks would do what the old school Tolkien fandom would do and provide translations either in brackets after the word/at the end of the sentence or at the end of the fic. That fandom really had its shit together when it came to helping language newbies in the parts I played in and encouraged you to use translators to add your own words and phrases.

Cyrillic is not hard to learn for an English speaker! I took Russian in college and on the first day I looked at that textbook in despair. But on day one, they taught us half the alphabet, and we had 'em down. The next day, they taught us the rest of the alphabet, and we had 'em down. Truly. A couple of hours and you'll have it.

Yeah, what some of the others said: It's great if you want to learn it, but the thing you will probably notice first after you learnt it and go on to read fanfic, it's that ~90% of the cyrillic sentences are bad google translate messes.

Natasha paired with any Asgardians sometimes comes with a double whammy of that *and* Norse. It's cool people are interested in different languages both spoken and no longer spoken but sometimes I want to read without constantly having to scroll to a footnote.

I want to learn Japanese to read manga. It's not a big deal.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-28 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I sat down and learned cyrillic because of Man From UNCLE!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-28 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
On one hand: Go! Learn it!!

Learning it can be weird, but once you get the letters down, it's really easy. (Although I once fucked up an eye exam because I saw "H" and because it was pretty soon after my Russian final I said "N" and my eye doctor was like, "No.")

On the other hand, 95% of the time I encounter Russian (transliterated or in Cyrillic) in fan works, it's horribly wrong. It's usually from Google translate, which doesn't always work.
