Looking at Elenaria (my Warden), I think I did a weird mix of both roleplaying and going for the best results. Elenaria started out an expy for an already existing RP character who would naturally fit my mode of playing - I am one of those people who can't really play an evil character. I also went through the wiki, read how to get through quests and found out what the best results would be and played that out, researched how to harden Alistair specifically because I wanted to get him to accept having a mistress (Elenaria was an elven mage - not a marriagable prospect).

Thing is, almost all the "ultimately better" options fit into my idea of who Elenaria is. The only one I still quibble on is siding with Belhen in Orzammar, as I suspect she, as an outsider not understanding the caste system when she first arrived, would like Harrowmont better to start with. I can fudge that - maybe I'll play it out some time, siding with Harrowmont until the last moment and then crowning Belhen instead - I can even work that out in headcanon.

Bhelen/Harrowmont is the one I find tricky, too. I mean, it clearly turns out so much better with Bhelen, but he's such an asshole; why would a good character side with him unless they were legitimately an oracle!? I had to do headcanon pretzels with that one for my Amell!

I think that was this thing that was really well done in Origins. You (and in extension your Warden) clearly made decisions with good intentions and it gloriously backfired.

da

Yeah that choice was probably Origin's most (or only) morally gray choice. The others are pretty simple. Save the mages, because they don't all deserve to be murdered. Reconcile elves and werewolves. Save Connor and the arl's family, while killing the demon. Very simple.

But Bhelen is a murdering asshole... yet a better ruler. And in fact, a lot more compassionate to the casteless, because iirc his girlfriend is casteless. He is more "liberal" in his policies. Whereas Harrowmont seems like an overall nice and well-meaning guy, yet he runs Orzammar conservatively and things just don't go well at all.

I always end up going for Harrowmont because Bhelen's an ass, but I think I should switch it up. Still, I'd rather think my Warden couldn't anticipate the results, so s/he'd go for Harrowmont just because all s/he can possibly know is that he's not a douchebag like Bhelen.

Because it's pretty clear he's both the stronger choice and the more progressive one well before the ending cards, if you actually talk to him and to other people around Orzammar who have opinions. It's a choice between "yeah, this guy is an asshole, but he also has ideas that might turn life for anyone who isn't in a wealthy caste into something less of a living hell" and "this guy is slightly less of a personal-level asshole, but holy shit his politics suck".

A character who's both good and traditionalist (or naive, or just not really versed in politics) might jump on board Team Harrowmont by default, because yeah, he comes off as more pleasant, but there is plenty of room for a character who is both good and shrewd to jump on board Team Bhelen.

The way I see it, it depends on how much independent research the Warden does. Do they go out and talk to the general citizens their thoughts? Do they investigate Dust Town? Doing that might result in them getting more of an idea of Belhen's position on giving the Casteless some rights. That in the end would be the deciding factor for a Good Warden - they decide to support Belhen because he will do something for the Casteless.

That's why Elenaria would, in my headcanon end up putting Belhen on the throne, even though she thought Harrowmont was a better person.
