I was already kind of done with FIFA over the artificial turf for women's World Cup in Canada. This just sealed the deal.

I'm not quite up to date with all the details but basically yeah, there's a controversy because the Women's World Cup is scheduled to take place on artifical turf fields and some women players are suing about it I think. And on the one hand I can kind of understand where FIFA is coming from, it is apparently difficult and expensive to maintain high-quality natural pitches in Canada, but on the other hand they're planning on playing the men's World Cup in fucking Qatar in the middle of summer and they're going to use real pitches for that so it's slightly absurd to say it's because of environmental factors.

DA

As far as I know, they've now dropped the legal action because the governing bodies were delaying things and threatening individuals with suspension in a tacit bullying campaign to make sure they couldn't proceed.

Ah! I didn't hear that. Doesn't really surprise me though, since that seems to be a major component of FIFA's playbook (along with things like bringing corruption allegations against anyone who challenges Blatter).

The argument is that artificial turf is easier to keep nice than real grass. In the wet parts of Canada where the tournent would be taking place, it's not the worst argument in the world -- the field turns into a swap, and injuries are far more likely simply because your cleats don't grip the way they're designed to. But artificial turf is slick as well, and there are little pellets in the turf hurt ehen you go down.

So female players were suing due to gender discrimination because all the men's matches are played on grass fields.
