Yep. Yep, yep, yep. International football is awful, the IOC is blatantly corrupt, there's nothing any of us can do about it, and we're all still going to watch it anyway. Russia's not great but Qatar is absurd, and everyone knows it's absurd, and everyone knows they got the Cup through bribery, and there's just no way to change any of that.

Actually, most of the top domestic leagues are pretty awful as well. And most of the other international sporting bodies. And most of the other sports in the world. It's so frustrating that something so beautiful is in the control of people so awful.

So STOP WATCHING IT. That's what you can do about it.

I mean, yeah, you can't stop everyone else watching it, but YOU don't have to contribute to the crap.

I've lost a lot of interest in football lately and this is one of the reasons. I can't with so much corruption.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I was already kind of done with FIFA over the artificial turf for women's World Cup in Canada. This just sealed the deal.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
what happened? did the female players just get artificial turf?

Personally, I'm looking forward to it and can't wait for the date to approach... but for exactly all the wrong reasons.

It's such a joke, I have no idea how Qatar's going to even attempt to pull it off. I mean, they're talking about moving the tournament dates, but just due to all the other conflicts with the Winter Olympics and the local leagues... yeah. None of the officials want to back out of it now, but I really want nothing more than to watch as the whole plan crashes and burns and either England or America or Germany has to step in at the last second since we're the only ones who have enough ready-to-go stadiums.

Honestly, I kind of doubt that'll happen - just because no matter how bad it gets, they can still just throw more money at FIFA. It probably will be an embarrassing disaster from a sports perspective though.

I'm with you. Awarding it to Qatar was horribly corrupt and repulsive, but I'm looking forward to the fallout. The matches being a joke because of the hot weather being totally unsuitable, for one. Yet all the football fans will keep watching, exposing them for the dicks they are who truly don't care about anything as long as the football factory keeps pumping out matches.

This makes me a bad person, perhaps. But football is rife with violence, rape and corruption already and it's appalling from the outside that the fans generally don't care. It'll be nice to have this all come to a head in a way that exposes it.

I was watching the Last Leg recently and Dara O'Briain summed it up nicely when he said that football isn't a profession like being a welder. There's a certain media attention that comes with the job. You can't expect to be a criminal and expect to still it to be business as usual when the world's watching you. Unfortunately, that's been the case too long with FIFA.

John Oliver, is that you?

STOP WATCHING IT

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Stop supporting corruption by watching/caring about football. If people stopped caring, watching, and paying, it would stop happening.

If you give any money to any major sports, you are the victim of a ridiculous scam, with blood and corruption on your hands.

This is like saying, "Stop listening to music," to a fan of music that is conflicted over how record labels treat their artists.

This is so naive. You're never going to be able to get enough people to give up watching sports for it to actually make a difference.

I can understand your feelings about the World Cup and Qatar. I wish there was a way to stop FIFA from letting Qatar to host the WC but seems like I can't. The least I could do is not go to Qatar, but I do feel guilty for watching the WC and letting FIFA continue to be the evil overlords that they are.

I'm also one of those people that clings onto hope that the Qatar situation will get so bad that FIFA will have no choice but to let another country host the 2022 WC. Fingers crossed on the USA because I live in there.

Watch it through pirate sites only, so they don't get your money.

Text: I couldn’t believe it when Qatar was awarded the World Cup, and I can’t bloody believe it’s still set to be played there!

So it’s still 7 ½ years away, but I’ve alrady made th resolution not to watch any of the games.

The trouble is, I sense that I’m not going to be able to keep that resolution - it’s still football!

Maybe I’ll just secretly watch it on my own and not tell anyone.

i'm still bitter that when this was first announced i said it was a terrible idea for so many reasons and all the idiots on ontd_football were like "qatar is a poc country so its RACIST to say this is a bad idea"

where are u idiots now, huh

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Reminds me of the handball world cup that's happening in Qatar right now. It's completely fucked up, Qatar's team only has four players from Qatar, everyone else is bought from other countries and right now they "magically" made it to the semi-finals.

Man if they can't even handle a handball championship, the second biggest sporting event on Earth (behind the Olympics) is going to be a disaster.

Still bitter about Brazilia and Russia hosting. smh.

lmao get over it

if you were truly concerned about all the corruption and the like, you wouldn't have even watched all the previous world cups

if u gonna care about something you do it right, not this selective concern bs lol
