In fandom, yes.

Not really there even. It's inaccurate terminology. There's just not a lot of het.

Re: Het Erasure?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes...because fans erase it...

How are the fans erasing it?

Canon het couples don't magically become less canon or less het no matter how much slash or femmeslash there is.

Similarly, the volume of slash produced does not in any way impede het writers from also producing works.

In fairness, people who want to talk about LBGT erasure do, in fact, sometimes argue that putting canon LBGT characters into het ships actually constitutes erasure

I think this is a stupid position, for much the same reasons you've outlined here, but it is a thing that people actually think

those people are literally wrong tho

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
you may be technically correct but i think it is wrong in terms of the larger connotations of the term

Yes, how dare minority sexualities decide to interpret characters as non-heterosexual! We should just deal with the scraps we're given!

maybe, but then the question is, "should anyone capable of rational thought give a shit" and that one has a pretty easy answer.

Well, I wrote a het story for a het challenge and it came second (by one vote) to a slash story. I have no idea why the mod didn't disqualify the slash story, especially since there was a parallel slash challenge running at the same time.

I think you could say my het story was erased.

lol the struggle is real

Yep :-)

(TBH, it still pisses me off when I think about it, for obvious reasons).

In all seriousness that is weird. especially since I have a tough time believing that in fandom, slashfic gets "social justice" boost points by any fan who isn't a social justice warrior, and even then I thought many in that lot are convinced slash pairings are queer appropriation or something... then again I've never been on tumblr fandoms, so if that's where you were?

either way in a het contest it is weird that slash was allowed to participate even? was in a genderswap or something that could maybe weakly justify it?

Re: Het Erasure?

I didn't understand it either. It was on LiveJournal. And, no, there was no genderswap element, or anything like that, but it was the fandom's juggernaut pairing.

I wonder if there was only one entry in the slash challenge and the mods decided to lump all the entries together. I don't know.

that's shitty :/ they really should have disqualified it. Guidelines are guidelines!

Lol
Maybe it's a clue they didn't really read the stories..

That was uncalled for.
