I think that he (Sherlock Holmes from Elementary) is a lot closer to his (Sherlock Holmes from the original Canon) personality and general character than him (Sherlock Holmes from the BBC's Sherlock)

I think they're both a mile off, but the dude in Elementary just couldn't manage to work for my suspension of disbelief.

I haven't watched much of either but from what I've seen I don't think either is especially close. But then I kind of dislike all film and TV versions of Holmes, so I'm not exactly a reliable commentator here.

*gasp* Even the Granada one with Jeremy Brett? Say it isn't so!

My favorite Watson is still and forever Emma Bishop from Ruse. (Original series, not the later add-on after Disney bought the characters.)

I rather enjoyed Elementary's interpretation of how a person with Holmes' talents of observation and deduction would work in a modern world of information overload. Mostly I like his capacity to be compassionate.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
i REALLY like that about elementary holmes too, he's got that ability to care and be kind and compassionate. i dig it

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. It's as if the writers on Elementary took a look at BBC Sherlock and went hey, you know what? Let's make our Holmes a guy who's not an asshole to his friends and everyone he comes into contact with.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I think most people would agree at this point, so

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, to me this doesn't seem like a secret so much as... plainly observable?

LOL nope

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well BC certainly isn't anything like canon Holmes. Can't speak to Elementary, haven't seen it.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Are you that crazy Sherlock fan who keeps defending the show despite its obvious flaws?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I agree but I'm bias because I hate hate HATE the BBC Sherlock. I find it absolutely terrible.

I mean, I don't think either of them are super close to the original books, but of the two... Yeah, I agree.

At least Elementary's Sherlock is nice. Maybe not all the time, but far more than BBC's, IMO, and I like that streak of compassion.

As someone who likes both (but hasn't watched Elementary in God knows how long), I agree. Not that I think either are particularly close to the source material, but I do think Elementary is more so than BBC Sherlock.

That said, I don't actually care all that much as long as I'm entertained; the books and film/TV versions are two very different things.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, hard to say whether I agree or not. I don't think BBC Sherlock's take is anywhere close, though, so Elementary!Sherlock might win by default.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
BBC Holmes is hilariously off the mark, so Elementary Holmes wins. I don't think Elementary Holmes is the most faithful adaptation ever, but I really do like that interpretation of him and I think they did try to stick to the spirit of the original Holmes.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Why is this a secret? I thought it was popular opinion that Elementary is better than Sherlock in every way.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
... you've never met the Sherlock fandom, have you.

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2015-02-05 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Dude it is so not hard for any other Holmes interpretation to be closer than BBC Sherlock to book Holmes. And I'm saying that as someone who still loves Sherlock in all his god moding, doctor aping, assholeness. Even the 22nd century one that runs around with Lestrade's great great whatever daughter and robo helper Watson is more book accurate.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
What about Asylum Sherlock Holmes?

I can't mesure how much they differ from the source. They're both different and don't make me think about the books. Come to think about it, book!SH is not that fleshed out. An hawk like nose, long fingers, very bored from time to time, doesn't eat during cases, likes concerts, likes Watson...
I feel that I know more about Watson than Holmes from books. Watson gets the short stick in tv interpretations anyway. Like, Rathbone, ok, he's somewhat canon like, but Watson - lol. BBC John is too cutting. Soviet Watson is the most canon like, I guess. And the most canon Holmes is Young SH.

Anyway OP why no RDJ version? Or is it too AU to even conteplate closiness to the books? :D
