And I hate it when people hate on non-popular classic authors.

CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?!

What are some examples of "non-popular classic authors" you like?

I wish I could find the quote -- and it was from a "highbrow" author - that basically said, "There is a place for -- and an art to -- creations whose primarily intention is to entertain. They may not be Great Art, but they are Great Fun."

Sounds like something Stephen King has said, but he's not exactly "highbrow".

I have no idea whether or not, but that sounds exactly like something that CS Lewis would say.

You might have made it up out of other quotes. Googling turns up literally zero results.

Me, my literary bitterness are the older folks who think that kids these days aren't reading as much... despite 500 page doorstops now being considered pretty normal. Seriously, back in the '90s, you could NEVER have persuaded any children's librarian on earth that kids would be into that!

If a friend is implying that they think you're stupid, repeatedly, it is time to dump their ass.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
They said "accidentally implying" in a way that suggests the friend did it once, unconsciously.

Seriously, if you would dump a friend for that, you're not going to ever have any friends. Even if they didn't dump you first for equally frivolous minor dickery.

Also, I don't know if OP is stupid, but they're repeating the same justifications I've heard stupid people use, so it's possible that their friend has a point.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Most of today's "classics" were once popular fiction...

I hope that's not the case for 50 Shades someday.

OTOH, I get annoyed when people hate on popular stuff. It seems so snobbish.

But sometimes things do make me giggle. Like this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Bearlebrity-Paranormal-Shifter-Romance-Standalone-ebook/dp/B00SS5TJHE/

I'm glad people are enjoying it, but at the same time, I'm wondering why.

But good for them. But why. You know?

Anyway, I agree w/ you. :-)

So many "classics" are not enjoyable reads. I was an English major and there are few that I like and I haven't even read many of them. Lit snobs like that always got on my nerves and I would advise that you just ignore your friend.

At the same time, if she's implying you're stupid, she's not a friend you need anyway.

Your friend sounds stupid. Just sayin'.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't think this secret was about classic books but everyone seems to have taken it that way. Is it just me, or it more likely to be about fanfic writing since the OP is directly talking as if they know the writer?

Some fanficcers get really pretentious about using long, twisted sentences and unnecessarily obscure words. For me, that's the sign of bad writing, not good. I've found these writers to be be unattractively insecure. they're hardly ever as bright as they think they are. The fact that this particular writer is implying that other people are stupid doesn't say much for them either.

The words should never get in the way of the story.

[personal profile] snowcipher 2015-02-05 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
The OP specifically mentions a book in the secret. I took that to mean while the person she's talking to is probably a fic writer, she's dissing OPs taste in books. I could be wrong, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
This person you are talking about sounds like a "lit fiction elitist" In that case you have my sincerest sympathies. I find lit fic elitists to be unbearable and obnoxiously self righteous. The equivalent of an angsty teenager who thinks they're a genius surrounded by idiots.

I know I sound kinda mean, but I've encountered people like this. One claimed that all genre fic was "by the numbers shit" and held up lit fic as The Only Way. I'm tempted to tell them that Lit fic is pretty samey too. "Realistic fiction + heaps pretention and meaningful angst"

Ugh, God save us all from lit snobs. If I want a bunch of depressing navel-gazing about how terrible humanity is, I will turn on the news. I don't need it in my entertainment, thanks.

Sometimes I wonder about the people who write that stuff. I mean, I write what I want to read (which is, in general, kick-ass people doing kick-ass things). But to each their own, I guess.

I'd be annoyed too if my friend implied I was stupid for not having their supposed high-brow literary tastes?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, literary snobs are annoying, but ngl OP "fancy words, vague metaphors, and incomprehensible symbolism" is pretty much code for "I don't understand this book and feel stupid that you do so I'm going to shit on you for being a snob."

It's one thing if your friend really is being a catty, insulting snob who genuinely looks down on you for your choice of favorite book. But I'm willing to bet that this street runs both ways.

Okay. It sounds like your friend is being shitty about your book preferences, but it also sounds like you're shitting on what your friend likes to read. You do know s/he probably enjoys that type of book just like you enjoy another type, right? They're not reading them so they can look down on you or spite you.

Talking to your friend about what bothered you without doing to them exactly what they're doing to you might be tricky, it seems.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
So many butthurt assholes in this thread.

How hard is it to understand, other people don't have to like the same things you do and can read what they want. They really shouldn't have to justify it.

Yes I am aware that lit fiction was written during times of great upheaval and reflects the surroundings. People don't have to enjoy reading the books though. And honestly if I had a friend who was constantly on me about the things I enjoy, I might be a little bitter too.

Text: I love you, but it bothers me how much you shit on popular writers.

I get that you have very “refined”’ tastes, but just because a book isn’t full of fancy words and vague metaphors and incomprehensible symbolism doesn’t make it bad.

God forbid someone want to enjoy a story without having to carry around a fucking dictionary. some of us don’t have your impressive vocabulary.

[strikethrough text] tl;dr I’m bitter about you accidentally implying that I’m stupid, but I don’t want to bring it up because it’s a silly thing to be bitter about

Since everyone in this thread is talking about "classics"...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I hate how people lump all "classics" together like they're a genre. They're NOT.

Unless you seriously think that Pride and Prejudice can be put in the same category as Beowulf... Yeah, no.

There is a lot of variety in what we call "classics".
