How strongly connected do you feel to your gender?

Re: How strongly connected do you feel to your gender?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Moderately I suppose. It's unquestionably a part of my identity but not one that I feel strongly or am constantly aware of.

I'm NB, so only vaguely.

Pretty strongly, but that's because I'm trans and spent a lot of years analyzing and attacking, determined to figure out what exactly was the components of my identity.

It's amusing, really. I don't believe that the gender of 'male' has ANY inherent qualities to it, so it's functionally meaningless to me, but still so important. I like that paradox.

That said, other people here are less attached. One of the kids has kinda switched her opinions twice, and another one will get really annoyed if you make her pick.

Well, I guess it's an accustomed part of my identity after having had it for decades. I like to think that if I suddenly woke up and was magically the other sex (like that Oscar Wilde character) I'd shrug and go on.

I guess I probably would freak out like Ash in Misfile a little.

Apparently I feel a lot more strongly about it than most cis people.

Not at all really.

It's never been a huge part of my self image. I mean of course I'm aware of it in plenty of situations, but that's more intellectually and the impact it's going to have on others around me then anything else.

I wish people didn't automatically assign me a gender and any correlating stereotypes based on my appearance (I'm genderqueer). Other than that, it barely affects my everyday life.

Depends on what you mean. I feel strongly female in the sense that I know I'm a woman. But I think that what defines what a gender is is an entirely personal thing. I do not consider myself feminine, and I don't feel connected to most of the stereotypes about women.

Re: How strongly connected do you feel to your gender?

Both strongly and not that much.

By "strongly" I mean that I have never questioned my gender or wished to be another gender and have always felt comfortable with it, and by "not that much" I mean that it's not an important building block of my identity nor do I think about it on a daily basis.

That's a good question. I rarely think about it and the only time I wish I was a man is when the devil's waterfall comes to visit. I do like wearing pink, heels, and lipstick, but I also like weapons, bicycles, torture stories/scenes, so I'm not too stereotypical.

Well, I've been fine with my gender ever since I realized there are no inherent male and female characteristics so it doesn't matter if I don't fit the stereotypes about women. I'm not sure what being strongly connected to my gender would mean though... I'm just fine about it.

Not at all. The nearest thing I get to it is being glad I don't have a dick to get in the way of things.
I once had a dream where I could suck in my boobs like people suck in their gut. First thing I did on waking up was try it. Of course, ribs...

I don't even really know what it would really mean to feel connected to gender so not much I guess?

I'm a cis guy, so my gender's always been pretty much plug-and-play for me. I spend a lot of time on critical examinations of masculinity, male stereotypes, things like that, but for myself? It's always just been there, pretty comfy.

Not particularly. I've always felt like a gay man in a woman's body, but I'm not trans. I'm a pagan who believes in reincarnation, so my belief is that this is my first lifetime as a woman, or my first in a very long time.

I've always wanted to be androgynous-looking, like David Bowie or Tilda Swinton.

Not at all, really. I think I might have preferred being a guy somewhat, just not quite as much to really fall under the trans category. I could have done without breasts or periods, though. Or at least the ability to get pregnant *shudder*. Not a fan at all.

I don't really feel like if it's about me when people talk about "women" in general or "just girly things" or whatever. I just don't feel like the vast majority of it applies to me at all - this goes from silly things like loathing chick flicks to more serious stuff, like not really having a feeling of unsafety.

I guess I'm girly in the sense that I like nice clothes and jewelry, but that's about it. And maybe fanfic, that skews female, too.

Eh.

I'll probably be pretty traumatised and upset if I woke up a boy because sudden change, but I'm not attached-attached. I like my boobs but mostly it's just the body I grew up with and I'm familiar with.

I'm female. Always will be. I may be more of a tomboy, but I'm a girl, sex and gender and all. I don't wanna be a dude, ever. Outside the whole not having a period thing.

Re: How strongly connected do you feel to your gender?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I like male bodies a lot better than female ones and I think they're superior in almost every way. More muscle mass. You can eat more. You don't have periods, getting pregnant, going through menopause. Sure, boners are inconvenient, but that's not a huge deal. Plus you get basically guaranteed orgasms.

Women might have slightly better immune systems and live longer (although the cause of that is debatable, given that men are more likely to engage in risky behavior) but besides that I see ZERO advantage in having a female body.

But I'm not a huge fan of everything about male gender roles though. I don't know how I would deal with having to hide my emotions and all the dick-measuring, "proving you're a real man" bullshit men have to go through.

I'm not sure what you mean by "strongly connected," but my identity has been shaped by the fact that I was born a cis-gendered female, and that I identify as a bisexual cis-gender female, that I have lived almost 60 years as a female, that society has seen me as a female, that I've made friends and had lovers as a female ... so, yeah, I guess I feel strongly connected to my gender.

It's not something I think about much but I'm a girl and see myself as such even if I'm not overly feminine, and aside from being curious about what being a guy is like I wouldn't want to be one permanently. I like being a girl, awful periods aside.

Re: How strongly connected do you feel to your gender?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, somewhat. I'm a cis female married to a cis male, and although I sometimes think it would be neat to have a dick, I know that medically it's just not possible in the same way that a cis male has one, so I'm fine with being a female.

Re: How strongly connected do you feel to your gender?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. My gender is a thing that changes a little bit, depending on the day. When I'm at work, I'm dress a little more femme, but when I'm going out for fun (party, dinner with friends, date) I'm a little more masculine. I dislike being considered "butch" just because it sounds like I'm trying to be more of a masculine gay person than I feel. I just like dress shirts with jeans and a blazer, ok?

Anyway, I spent a long time trying to figure out my gender, and I finally came to the conclusion I'm more fluid than just one or the other.

So, "Meh."
