I agree but there's a lot of things that I would do differently if I was the one trying to make an American Sherlock Holmes TV series, and ultimately it's probably for the best that I'm not.

I no longer like Elementary, though I used to be a fan when the first season was airing. But I agree. I don't think they really thought this through.

I suppose their idea was to make Watson a sort of moral anchor for Holmes, which ought to include her reminding him that people dying is, in fact, a bad thing and that it's normal to be upset about it (hence her backstory). If she herself had issues seeing death as abnormal (which is a part of what some vets go through), this wouldn't work that well.

But I think there could be a more graceful solution to this problem than simply saying "let's just not make her a vet". The canonical Watson WAS one, and it didn't stop him from acting as a sort of moral anchor for Holmes.

On one hand, yeah, they didn't need to change.
On the other hand, I love Joan as a character just as she is, so I don't really mind the change.

This. I don't look at Elementary as an adaptation of the ACD Holmes, really. They're new characters, and Joan Watson is quite different from Dr. John Watson, and she's a good character in her own right.

If it isn't an adaption, they shouldn't use character names from ACD and make it out to be an adaption. Make it an original story if that is what it is.

:shrugs: I was into Arthuriana as a kid. And then comic-book superheroes. I learned a long time ago that you can have the same names for several characters, in-jokes, mythology gags, etc.; and still, honestly, be doing an entirely new story with new characters.

There's so many different adaptations of every character though that I don't see what's so sacred about them being in the with the exact particularities of the original characters. You have bamf Watson, bumbling Watson, sycophantic Watson, and so on. At this point the Watson role is basically to be a foil.

Agreed, I didn't understand this change. (I'm behind on Elementary and not sure I'll catch up anytime soon, but I love Joan. She's by far the best thing about this version, so while I'm not fond of this particular back story, it isn't a deal-breaker either.)

OT, but I always read "vet" as "veterinarian". I was very confused until I read the comments :)

Ha, me too.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-08 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I would definitely read an adaptation where Watson is a veterinarian, though I can't decide what role I'd like to see Holmes in... drug-sniffing dog? Irresponsible owner of a dog he's trained to detect criminal evidence?

Oooh, this is adorable. No, but what if Holmes isn't irresponsible, it's just the drawbacks of the job? Like, he and his dog were tracking down a criminal and the criminal wounded the dog? And now Holmes is super fussed about it, even though he's trying to appear chill :D But no worries, Watson will save his companion!

I'd happily read this.

Ahh that's even better! Too cute.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-10 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
And it would be called Sherlock Bones.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-10 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
...I think the porn industry may have already called dibs on that title.

I do the same before I realise which 'vet' is being talked about.

I don't watch the show (just haven't gotten around to it), but I agree with you.

I like the show and I agree, she could have and should have been an army doctor tbh.

Text: I really do like this show. But as a female vet, I wished they hadn’t changed her backstory from the original. There is no reason she couldn’t have been an Army surgeon.

Yeah, this bothered me too.
