TW: Discussions of abuse

(Anonymous) 2015-02-08 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
You people DO know that his father was an alcoholic who used to beat the shit out of him and choke him, right? And that's why he took off? His sister just published her own book because she couldn't stand people thinking like OP does. She says that while she doesn't blame her parents for his death, she does think they directly contributed to it.

That doesn't either make up for his... kind of ridiculous choices and lack of preparation, or make him the kind of inspirational figure that a lot of people want to see him as. It makes his death more tragic but still frankly kind of dumb.

also his last words in his letter emphasized that he KNEW what he did was a mistake. jeez people are cruel.

People are reacting at least as much to the idea of him being a hero as they are to him specifically, I think.

As an abuse victim: that doesn't fucking excuse not listening to other people saying he was going to die if he did this, and not actually putting in the research to actually be an outdoorsman.

Um, if every abuse victim ever went out and did something dangerous without listening to any of the people with actual experience at what they were attempting, and then died, you'd have more of a point. Leaving home to get away from an abusive situation, I get. But as an abuse victim myself, I wouldn't have made tracks for the Alaskan wilderness with insufficient prep unless I was planning to die from the get-go.

Maybe he was.

Nope. He tried to make his way back to civilization and failed. He left this note because he knew he was dying:

"Attention Possible Visitors. S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak to hike out. I am all alone, this is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August?"

That's not a suicide note, BTW. It's a call for help. I mean it's cool you want to participate in this conversation but since you don't seem to know anything about it, maybe you shouldn't speculate about the guy's motivations, especially when your theory contradicts everything that we know about it.

Him being an abuse victim doesn't have any bearing on his poor choices. It doesn't exempt him from needing to do his research, get and learn to use and maintain proper equipment, and listen to the experts on the subject. Being abused doesn't give you a free pass on how reality works.

He traveled around for a while before going to Alaska. Abuse may have made him leave home (and I wouldn't blame him for that) but it didn't make him go to Alaska (or make him decide to go out into the wilderness in Alaska or to do so unprepared) because he'd already left home quite a while before that. It's not like his only choices were 1) stay in an abusive situation, or 2) go into the Alaskan wilderness.
