That community college isn't evil. I work with high schoolers and some parents act like community college is the worst thing that could possibly happen to their kids; I want to scream at them, no, it might be the best thing.

I mean, sure, if your kid slacks off for a semester then drops out it's a waste, but that could happen just as easily at a four year school.

Agreed. I'm going to a community college here at home now after things went bad at my first school, and I haven't noticed a drop in the quality of the classes at all.

Agreed. Community colleges have a bad rep, but it depends on the college. One of my oldest friends teaches at one, and he's one of the most dedicated, fantastic teachers I know, super enthusiastic about his subject and his students.

It's a bit of snobbery, isn't it. People refuse to acknowledge that not everyone's suited to a four year college, so implying that a community college is a good bet is like an insult.

I actually felt like I got a better education at community college then some of my friends did at their 4 year schools; for one, we used the exact same text and for another, my community college had a very strict absence policy so I wasn't allowed to skip every other week like my friends at large schools did.

It was honestly great for me when I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. And then when I decided what college I did want to go to, I had a ton of credits that transferred over. I would recommend community college to anyone who doesn't want to spend a lot of money on their basic credits, it's a huge waste to do your basic credits at more expensive institutions and you aren't necessarily getting a better class.

I wish you'd worked at my high school. Other students were bad enough, but I had teachers who told us to watch our grades lest we end up attending a community college, in the same way that some people talk about working at a fast food place. Then again my high school was kind of gross and those same teachers and students talked about "slacker UCs" in the same way. I don't know that the University of California system is generally known for being easy to get into. And some of the most dedicated and intelligent people I've ever met were putting themselves through community college by working paper hat jobs at fast food places.

DA. Yeah sometimes the criticisms of community college feels a little classist.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with working a job and putting yourself through community college. I actually think it's a bit better then going into huge amounts of debt just to say you were at University for 4 years.
