+1

Especially when it comes to social issues. There's a lot of strawmen out there, but there's also lot of people who happen to think things you don't.

Yes, thank you. Something crazy happened recently in my personal life because one person only thought of their needs, and didn't take into account how it'd mess up MY life.

What gluten really does to your body

Re: Sometimes I wish more people knew....

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my gosh, I know! Like I'm REALLY gluten intolerant and it makes me feel tired and lethargic if I have any. People don't take you seriously when you ask restaurants to make sure their entrees are gluten free. I once had to send back a salad because I found a crouton at the bottom and it took them forever to fix it so I was stuck eating the free bread while everyone else had their lunch. :(

The stupid woman who spilled coffee on herself and sued

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
That that ^ version of the story is not at ALL what really happened.

Because we all think of some ditzy bimbo who sued over a minute of discomfort, not of an elderly grandmother who was hospitalized for burns.

Re: The stupid woman who spilled coffee on herself and sued

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Also, she was (a) not driving the car, someone else was and (b) the car was parked when the coffee was spilled, which is something that a lot of people seem not to realize

That in the U.S., the herbal supplements sold in stores have NO regulations whatsoever, so even if you truly think that _______ is better for your condition than actual drugs, there is absolutely no guarantee that the herbal supplement you're taking contains the herbs it claims to contain, much less in concentrations that might actually be helpful.

No seriously:

That community college isn't evil. I work with high schoolers and some parents act like community college is the worst thing that could possibly happen to their kids; I want to scream at them, no, it might be the best thing.

I mean, sure, if your kid slacks off for a semester then drops out it's a waste, but that could happen just as easily at a four year school.

sorta inspired by #10

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly wish more people-specifically writers- knew about " ideas, base concepts and premises" and the difference between the two.

Am idea is very general idea, the spark of a story. "Wizards" "little creatures with cool powers" "creatures from the internet" or "ghost hunters" might be ideas.

A concept is basically a more focused idea "What if there was a school for young wizards" "What if there was a whole world accessed through the internet", "What if the world is filled with tiny creature with cool powers", or "what if there were a team of professional ghost hunters?"

A Premise is more specific. It's the foundation of your story. An example would be,
* "A boy who was raised by his horrible relatives finds out he's been invited to a wizard school, and he goes on to learn how to defeat the evil wizard who killed his parents."
* "a bunch of kids get sucked into a world in the internet filled with data based creatures to save the world."
* "The world is inhabited little creatures with cool powers that evolve called Pokemon. One boy trains a team of Pokemon to win battles and become a Pokemon Master"
* "A bunch of former scientists in New York who lost their jobs band together to become professional ghost hunters"

I think this is important because I see a lot of people who seem to think that using the same idea as another person is "stealing" their idea of "ripping them off". Someone who writes a coffee shop AU" (which is pretty much a basic concept) in the same fandom as yours? Sorry they aren't stealing anything from you. If they use your words? THAT'S stealing. If all of the characters in the AU have the same backstory as yours? Technically not illegal but stealing a premise.

An idea or a basic concept cannot be stolen because they technically aren't owned by anybody and you can do a lot of different things with them. When I listed 'wizards' earlier as an example, that could have referred to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, the Young Wizards series, sword and sorcery maybe. A Premise can be be copied /count as "ripping off" because it is a collection of pretty specific ideas.

*snrk* The stuff we did our multi 101 thread about a while back.

Like, I'm used to answering all the questions, but seriously, it's so frustrating that after all these years, there STILL isn't a resource I feel comfortable giving to people without caveats.

Christopher Columbus

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-02-09 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Christopher Columbus had nothing to do with showing that the world was round. The Greek proofs were part of a classical education in the 15th century. Isabela in particular was responsible for commissioning the translation of plundered and confiscated Greek from Arabic.

Racism in Europe is not necessarily the same as the racism in America, see: White people can be mistreated because of their nationality/heritage.

mostly the Formula 1 one, because clearly I have my priorities right.

That Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the US. And that Puerto Ricans are naturally born Americans.

I read on a message board the other day describing Puerto Ricans as being, "practically American." Yes, I corrected that person.

But that wasn't the first time I came across someone like that. I've told people that I am Puerto Rican and I was born there. They have told me that I was lucky my dad was American. (He's Irish-American.) That way I didn't have a hard time becoming a citizen. *narrows eyes* Nope, pal, Mom's American too. Just an American of Puerto Rican heritage.

How allergies work (and don't work). Also, how vaccines work. And human reproduction. Oh, and how global climate change works, while we're at it.

So-- I wish more people had a very basic understanding of science. Like, quality high school/100-level college course/3-2-1 Contact basic.
