(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 01:46 am (UTC)(link)dog is okay. he is very nice but also very big and unpopular breed. he is ok with dogs and people but i know he is not okay with the small like cats and birds. my fence is high but i dont know how cat got in. i hope cat does not come in again.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 02:31 am (UTC)(link)Many, many dogs aren't safe around small animals. It doesn't make them bad dogs or you a bad owner, it just means the dog has a strong prey drive. (Most terriers are like this, even the tiny, floofy ones, but they get less hassle for it than larger dogs.)
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 03:45 am (UTC)(link)my bigger dogs seemed pretty content with chasing away small creatures, but the smaller ones are the ones that actually tried to kill and eat anything that didn't get away fast enough
finding little bloody pieces of lizards and birds is not cool :(

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 12:01 am (UTC)(link)makes sense! yeah, i'm always very careful about not letting them roam free and take a lot of care not to leave the figurative room open for tragedies to happen

She was out watching both, but it happens so fast. The dog senses movement, takes off like a bullet... you're talking like a 10 second window to make any sort of a difference.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 09:09 am (UTC)(link)Similarly, one of my chickens escaped and strayed into my neighbours yard and their jack russel got it :(
It's unfortunate, but can happen.
Right now I have the two high prey-drive larges dogs and two rabbits. I'm being very careful, bought them a sturdy chicken coop for their house, have them in their own room with a puppy pen blocking off direct access, behind a closed door and a baby gate.
I'm made the chance the dogs can get them as small as I can but there is the tiny chance of shit happening.
tldr OP, it's not your fault a cat strayed into your yard and your dog got it.
