I don't use mods (I have nothing against them, I just don't bother) but I see no reason why people should raise such a big stink over this. People need to chill out.

Personally, I would've loved to romance Cass as a woman (and was quite sad when I realized that wasn't possible) and aren't surprised there are others out there that wanted to.

Are people freaking out about Cullen/Dorian fanfic, or Cass/f!Inquisitor? (Though I haven't seen much Cass/f!Inquisitor, or read Cullen/Dorian.) I did see one post complaining about Cass/f!Inquisitor fanart but I just scrolled on by.

I haven't seen much complaining about either Dorian/Cullen (just people who aren't interested in it) or Cass/F!Inq, but then again I haven't been looking. I'm sure they're out there.

I think people feel fanfics/arts are somewhat more okay than mods, because they are away from the actual game and not in any shape or form canon, while mods are changing the actual in-game sexualities.

On some level I do understand feeling weird about mods that change sexuality, but there are mods for so many other things too...it just seems like an eventuality. People have been doing this since Origins too, it isn't new. If people are reading fanfic of Cass/f!Inquisitor then clearly they enjoy the pairing, and they might be enjoying it in a different way but the mod isn't making the pairing canon either.

IDK, I'm going to stay the hell away from all of this, but I wish people weren't so quick to harass others about this sort of thing.

I definitely don't see people freaking out over Cullen/Dorian (or any of the other myriad of M/M Cullen ships) the way they freak out over F/F Cassandra ships. Wish I knew why Cass fans were so invested in her straightness...

I've noticed tons of Cullen/Dorian (it isn't the pairing for me, but people are allowed to like it) and have never seen anyone say, "That's wrong". I guess maybe the people complaining only have an issue with the mod? (Though I know that can't be true for everyone since I DID see that post about f/f Cass fanart.)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
There were people hating on Cullen/Dorian, especially after it was revealed that Cullen was intended to be a bi character before it got cut. Not many people, but they were all "noooo, he's straight, you won't rob me of my straight romance."

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-02-28 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get that; fanfic isn't robbing you of anything, and even if Cullen was originally intended to be bi it didn't make it into the game. The people who wanted het got it, and the others are exploring themselves through fanworks like every other fandom ever.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
And even if he were bi, they'd still have their F/M romance. It sounds a little biphobic when they go on and on about how it would ruin it for them if other people were romancing Cullen with male Inquisitors.

I've never seen anyone use the term 'ruin', but I wouldn't be surprised. Some people are super 'protective' of their romances. I get being attached to the characters as that's only natural, but...there's enough of them to go around seeing as they aren't a real person and anyone with a copy of the game can romance them.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Because male fans, on the whole, are a lot more likely to pitch a massive fit over anything they perceive as taking away what's theirs.

(Why anyone anywhere perceives mods installed on someone else's copy of the game as remotely relevant to their own experience is beyond me, but they do.)

On your second line - I think it is a common problem that a lot of people treat other people's preferences as a judgement of their own.

(It doesn't help that some people do act like "If you like something different than me then you are wrong!".)

David Gaider asked on Twitter if there was as much fuss over slash in fanfic as in mods and a lot of opinions given was that mods feel closer to home than fic does.

Ooo, he did? That's interesting. Well at least he isn't upset about the mods.

I just can't get that worked up about it, but people are entitled to their opinion. As long as they don't harrass other people it isn't an issue, but apparently they are. It makes me sad to hear how unpleasant BioWare fandom has become... the games are so enjoyable, but the fandom scares people off.

Yeah, one reason why I stay on the edges of the fandom is that I don't want to get into any of the craziness that happens.
