How do I find comfortable shoes that I can wear to work? I wear my sneakers 90% of the time right now, but I can't exactly wear them to work. But every shoe I buy is horrible and I hate wearing them.

Are you looking for guy shoes or girl shoes? (Sorry philstar22, don't think I've ever seen your gender mentioned)

In either case, what's the main discomfort you have with shoes that aren't sneakers? Do they pinch, are they too tight, or do you just hate the style...?

I'm a girl, though honestly I don't really care about the gender of shoes.

All of the above. I have weird feet. Mots of the time I get friction from non-sneakers either at the sides of my feet or the heels. And anything with a heel hurts my feat if I wear them for more than a few hours, but flats don't stay on my feet. And I can't wear sandles unless they are flip flops because straps across the top dig into my feet and cut them.

The most frequent problem, other than general foot pain, I have with dress shoes is that they cut into the back of my foot and sometimes my little toe as well.

I have the misfortune of having both big and wide feet that are also shaped a bit funny. Plus high arches.

That is a tough one.

Do your feet swell up when you're on your feet for a long time? It sounds as if that could be part of the problem. If so, then the first thing I'd suggest is always walking for an hour or so before trying on new shoes in shops.

As for work, could you get away with a smartish pair of espadrilles? They're fabric, and so shouldn't pinch in the same way as leather, plus there should be more give in them.

There are also sites online that can advise you on how to stretch your shoes so they don't rub. I'd be wary of continuing to wear shoes that hurt your feet though, you don't want to risk causing yourself an injury.

Sorry I can't be more help!

Depending on what's acceptable where you work:

1) Nurses' shoes. They're meant to be comfortable for people on their feet all day. They are still a pretty casual shoe, though. I had a black pair that I wore back when I worked in fast food and cashired, but they might not fly in an office (unless it's super casual) or upscale retail job.

2) Look for something with an athletic shoe/casual shoe/hiking boot construction but in mor formal materials. My current "everyday" shoes are sort of casual/semi-athletic in shape and feel, but the uppers are entirely brown leather and the soles are not typical athletic shoe soles (but still comfortable) so they read as more formal but are really comfy. (My mom used to have a pair of shoes that were basically suede sneakers and she could get away with wearing them in all kinds of situations when wearing regular sneakers would be a faux pas.)

3) Try looking at some mens' shoes, maybe? This is how I buy winter/work boots: I shop the mens' boot clearance sales because my feet are big enough to fit tge lower end of te mens' size range and it's the smaller mens' sizes that end up on clearance (plus it's easy to find them in wide widths). Never tried it with shoes.

I wear Chucks to work every day. Comfy, and look neat enough to go with skirts. (Plus mine are Batman ones, which makes them 500% cooler.)

Get thee to a good shoe store where only the display models of the shoes are out on the floor and a salesperson leaps on you like a puma the second you walk in the door. Tell them exactly what you need, have them make a few recommendations, and if they don't seem to be listening to you, leave. I had very good luck a couple weeks ago buying new work shoes at a Clark's, if you have one in your area.

You might have good luck with Cobb Hill shoes. They are made by the company that makes New Balance athletic shoes. I love their sandals.

I get crazy dry skin on my lips. It might be related to the fact that I get a dry mouth from medication (and treat it, although not as much as I should?). I will get some relief from one lip balm for a few weeks, then it will adapt like the fucking Borg and get dry again. I've tried exfoliating, and that's done nothing. Any recommendations?

Additional info: I think my lips are sensitive to vitamin E (I used to love Burt's Bees balms in HS but now they are too strong for my lips), and Carmex is the devil.

I'll be seeing my derm sometime this spring and I guess I'll ask him, but it is kind of sucky constantly getting flaky dry lips.

I'm too sensitive for carmex and all of the nice smelling ones I've tried.
My favourite is Nivea Essential Care. My friend swears by the little tubs of vaseline, and Lucas' paw paw ointment.

I hope you find something that works for you soon!

Nivea is the latest balm that's helped. But it's not doing the job as well as it used to. My favorite was Say Yes to Carrots in Carrot flavor, but it's no longer available and their others aren't as good.

Seconding the tub of Vaseline. It's cheap, it lasts forever, apply overnight, and you're golden in the morning.

I like Hurraw lipbalm, they have different aromas. I'm using Earl Grey atm.
Ehh... I've heard that lips get dry when lip's owner (hehe) is dehydrated. Maybe an air humidifier could be of some help.

It might help you to know that Carmex has salicylic acid in - which is very drying and also a common ingredient in a number of beauty products (especially lip balms). It's probably what's causing you to react to Carmex in that way and probably worth avoiding in other products if you can!

Re: Style advice thread

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yeah, I learned that years ago. Which is why I said it's the devil, in order to pre-empt people from suggesting it. I always avoid products with salicylic acid and vitamin E, they're too strong.

When my lips get like that, it's typically a combo of meds and winter sucking me dry. The only way I get back on track is to stay extremely extremely hydrated (to the point that I pee as often as an 80 year old man with a faulty prostate) and to put Vaseline on my lips multiple times a day. They're still always a little dry, but doing those things keeps them from looking disgusting and getting painfully chapped.

I think an air humidifier might do you good too.

...talk to your pharmacist or GP about the meds? I cut my side effects down to nil by halving my dosage.

Re: Style advice thread

Oh no, it's for some life-functionality-and-sanity-preserving shit. I'm taking less than I was 5 years ago, but I start getting symptomatic again on less. If bad dry mouth, dry lips, and some tiredness are the only adverse side-effects I'm getting, I'm fucking thrilled. And it apparently can cause worse (including dizziness and nausea), I've just never experienced them.

Re: Style advice thread

OK, as a petite pear shaped girl, I'm really confused on what to do about pants.

At this point I basically live in skirts and dark bootcut pants.

I've given up on jeans. Skinny jeans are awful. Cropped pants are even more awful. Bermuda shorts make me look like my mother. I feel so uncomfortable in mini shorts.

And then I read some articles that say apparently pears can get away with boyfriend jeans and harem pants. Whaaaat???? I thought these would make me look stumpy.

What's the truth?

Re: Style advice thread

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The truth is - those online guides are shite. I've never read one that works for me either, anon, and I'm tall and skinny.

The best advice I can give is trying on lots of styles, even the ones that you think won't suit you. Sometimes you can surprise yourself.

Re: Style advice thread

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The only way you can know the truth is to try things on and see for yourself.

But as someone who's also pear-shaped and petite, I know that I tend towards bottoms that are very fitted and tight, and I think most people with my build look nice in tight clothes too.
