How to speed up the onset of menstruation? (inherently TMI topic, post is probably fine)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on the pill, and I have a trip coming up, so I stopped taking the pills early. Usually it starts soon after I do that. This time it hasn't, and it's been four days. Is there anything I can do naturally, I don't know, an exercise or something, that will make it come faster? I need it to be over pretty soon.

(And to head off the inevitable question: no, somehow I doubt I'm the next Virgin Mary.)

No one thinks you're the next Virgin Mary, just sadly uninformed about how your own reproductive system and birth control works.

What? I meant to indicate there's no way I could be pregnant, since that's what people tend to ask when someone mentions "period didn't come when expected".

Everyone knew what you meant. But you still sound very ignorant of how your own system and birth control actually work, given the question you're asking. Special exercises to make your period come? Really?

Yes, I don't know these things. That's why I'm asking.

Yeah, sorry for being antagonistic. It's not not knowing things that set me off, it's not knowing things and then making a joke about all the things you don't know (ie: Virgin Mary!).

Not knowing how your system and birth control works have real, serious consequences and deserves to be treated as such.

Yeah? There are ways to induce menstruation. OP was probably just throwing ideas around, but it's a legit question.

Do you have to be such a judgmental arse about it?

sa
I swear, when anyone comes in here with questions about birth control/periods, some anon has to come in with a condescending and judgmental reply.

No, it's not everyone who has a question about these things, it's people who have questions that demonstrate how frighteningly ignorant they are about how birth control works (even though they have access to doctors, pharmacists and the whole goddamn internet) and are still having sex.

OP

I thought the Virgin Mary comment would be an understandable way of saying I don't have sex. And never have. Which is why I can't be pregnant. Did...did you really think I was saying "there's no way I could be pregnant, because I'm on birth control, which I think prevents me from conceiving even with all the sex I'm having"?

A lot of people swear by parsley tea.

Also ginger tea and applying a hot pack to your tummy.

I've also heard that parsley tea is an emmenagogue, which is weird because I thought it was also a diuretic.

My period doesn't usually start until four or five days of the sugar pill week/off week. I assumed that was natural as your body chemistry is adjusting. I don't think you can speed it up as far as I'm aware. Next time I would recommend not stopping your pills early but instead skipping your 'off week' if you're on a 21 day pack or your sugar pills if you're on the 28 day pack.

The breakthrough bleeding on off weeks isn't actually a real period and there's no harm in 'skipping' that not-period for a month, when the depo-provera needle is every three months and is perfectly safe.

I spent 3 years with a birth control implant and I got my period like once every six months and it is nothing dangerous about it. Skipping your period when you are on the pill is not dangerous, some of my friends do it on purpose quite often because of period pains and they are told to do so by their doctor.

I am not saying you should skip your period often without at the very least consulting a nurse*, but once no biggie.

*Do nurses have the right to prescribe birth control in your country?

Well, the way I have it, I get bleeding (whether it's my period or not) every six weeks. If I try to stack it any longer than that, it's not reliable, sometimes it ignores the pills and starts anyway. My trip is going to be on the sixth week, so my best shot is to do what I can to make it come early, rather than taking the risk to try and postpone it.

very hot showers and aerobic or otherwise strenous exercise do it for me

A friend of mine swears that aspirin can do the trick, something about it being an anticoagulant? But honestly I don't know if it's just the placebo effect.

Try believing that you desperately don't want your period to come. That always seems to do it for me.

/not a serious answer, sorry.

Also, schedule something that it would be really, REALLY inconvenient to have your period for.

One of my friend uses lavender I believe? Like, breathing in the scent. I don't know if it works but she will mention it every now and then to me so...

I know you said you were a virgin, but I don't know if you masturbate at all? Having an orgasm helps start my period, so maybe it would work for you.

OP

I did consider trying that, but I can only get stimulated during my period, paradoxically enough. Thanks for the suggestion, though, and thank you to everyone who's made one. I'll put as many to use as I can.
