The feminist reactions I've seen have been positive, e.g. http://www.themarysue.com/yurikuma-arashi-recap-episode-1/

LOL that screencap.

Where are all these alleged straight feminists hating on Yuri Kuma? All the hate I've read is from lesbians/bi women. (Or maybe I just assumed they are? Kind of like you might be assuming they're all straight?)

I'm a non-straight (female) feminist who loves the show, by the way.

We had one the other day. I don't remember exactly what day though or I'd point you to it.

Those people are dumb, ignore them.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think applying a Western feminist perspective to a Japanese yuri anime is more troubling but eh.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
You haven't actually read anything about what the OP's talking about are saying, have you? All the worthwhile negative and positive analyses of the show make it very clear that they are aware of the context they're working in.

This is what bugs me about most of the criticisms of the show I've seen tbh.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm having trouble reading this, am I the only one?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
No. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think some people may have trouble with it because all the girls look extremely underaged. At least to me anyway.
Some people aren't too comfortable with lolli fanservice yo. We all have different tastes, its nothing to get all huffy over.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
...That's not loli.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I've seen other lesbian bloggers talk about what they didn't like about it (and also get slammed by diehard Ikuhara fans) so. I don't understand why people think that if someone doesn't like your show it's because they're a bad lesbian or feminist killjoy. I like some questionable shit too but I also don't flip out at people who don't like it for understandable reasons.

Meanwhile the girls in Utena are only fourteen and it's chock full of sexual content, yet people hail it as the most feminist anime evarr (and then condemn YKA for being gross, even though most of the main cast is 3+ years older).

But neckbeards hate this show. Seriously, they hate it because it's not their typical 2pure4u holding hands yuri.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

Image: the characters from the anime Yurikuma Arashi in an erotic scene?

Text: I'd really love it if (straight) femenists would stop acting like only gross neckbeards could possibly like this show.

Do you know how refreshing it is to see a yuri anime that doesn't shy away from sexual themes?

Even if it may be technically aimed at the seinen market, it feels a lot more like women's yuri than all that pure Class S "best friends who kiss sometimes" bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
it's nice at least that a lesbian was responsible for the the character designs

Neckbeards aren't into the show, yeah. Most of the fanbase for it is queer women, at least in Western circles. This show is like, the opposite of what neckbeards dig in so many ways. And yeah I do see a fair amount of straight women crusading against the show and pretending only neckbeards like it. Nice job silencing all the queer women watching it.

I'm cool with people not personally digging it for whatever reason or not being comfortable with it, but for a lot of girls this show has really spoken to them as one of the few series out there that deals with female sexuality without being S class. For me personally the nudity in it hasn't come across as male gaze? Maybe it's because it's being done in collaboration with a lesbian yuri mangaka and most of the staff is female, but I don't feel like Ikuhara is trying to write a show for moe obsessed otaku here. It also feels more like women's yuri to me as well.

For the record, Yuri Kuma Arashi is the same as Utena in that the anime is technically classified as seinen but the manga is published in a shoujo magazine. So there is a marked attempt to reach a female audience with this show.

I'm not sure why you're singling out feminists here. Specifically straight feminists, for that matter.

Other than that bit, though, I completely agree.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
ngl i kinda wished you used a different image for this. that said i kinda agree. i was a bit skeptical at first but after reading some stuff about the show said by ikuhara/the staff i'm feeling more optimistic about it.
