So, what's the issue with this manga?

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-03-05 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I just looked it up, and I haven't found anything too bad so far.

I'm wondering the same thing. I read a few volumes of this back in high school and I hardly remember anything about it.

I remember watching the anime at the university's anime club, and enjoying it, but it was such a long time ago.

The lead guy is a douchebag.

I've never read this manga, but that's the default answer for all shoujo manga.

TV Tropes says his mother is horribly abusive to him, so he might get a pass on that.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
There were various things about it that I found 'problematic', to summarize a fairly long list with one catch-all SJW buzzword (though the epilogue warrants a special mention for being skeevy as hell). Yet nobody ever seems to think it's worth giving even a passing mention to the questionable stuff when handing out gushing recommendations.

Whether it personally bugs them or not, I honestly kinda question the judgement of people who can't even acknowledge why this or that element might bother other people, and maybe warrant a word of warning about.

I never found anything problematic about it. But you keep on being just like the people on Tumblr, OP.

Text: if you gave this your unqualified recommendation when I was looking for suggestions of worthwhile shojo manga series...?

...well, when I said, Thanks for the rec! :D

what I meant was, OMG get away from me D:

Kare Kano was cute, dammit, though I haven't read it in years.

I always tried to get into Kare Kano because it's always rated very highly, pops up on my rec lists, is finished, etc...

But I can never seem to get past the second volume. It's just so boring...

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
...you have an odd def of boring.

[personal profile] othellia 2015-03-05 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
IDK, tastes are subjective? Something about characters and the general plot just always seemed flat.

And I read just as much slice of life stuff as I do high fantasy/action, so... yeah. Not a genre thing.

OP

The secret wasn't actually about how much it sucks, but for what it's worth - I did also think that this manga sucks! I totally do not understand what anyone sees in it at all! (Sometimes I wonder if the people recommending it have even read it... apparently the anime is quite a bit different. Not seen it but I can only believe it must be better.) I trudged through it because people kept assuring me it's sooo awesome and sweet and funny and wonderful and yet also deep and insightful and... blahblahblah.

(I honestly laugh when people call this manga "deep". I found all the dark and angsty stuff so incredibly trite and, yes, thoroughly boring. It was like the most mindless and unoriginal soap opera dreck ever.)

I thought it started off mediocre and got worse, but all the gushing praise kept me believing it must get better. Eventually. Surely... By the time I was so far through it I figured that no, it never was going to, I thought I might as well just finish the damned thing... And then there was the epilogue, which reached a whole new level of horrible. Spare yourself!

Or, you know, maybe all the people recommending it are right, the manga is good and you're the one who is wrong.

Yeah -- I've read the summaries and can understand how it might be the kind of thing that appeals to some people, but if this is "deep and insightful," then so is The Bold and the Beautiful.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 04:18 am (UTC)(link)

Well, different strokes, etc.

I´m a huge Karekano fan. It´s my favorite shojo manga ever.

And honestly, modern shojo isn´t better, it always has the bland protagonist whose only interest in life is to have a boyfriend. At least Yukino was hard working and her goal was to be a successful career woman.

And Arima wasn´t like the regular male leads who are mean to the girl and treat her like shit. He was kind and supportive.

Things got too angsty later, but I love it anyway.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. I think Skip Beat is pretty damn great in the "protagonist with goals" category, and the dude is pretty decent imo.

I'm sure there's other titles out there, I'm just not a big shoujo reader...

I really liked Kare Kano, so I don't get why you're having a snit fit over it.

Never read it, but what's the epilogue? OP got me curious.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
After he rapes her in the school library, the main couple have a teen pregnancy resulting in a daughter who exists purely to be paired off with their best friend - who's Totally Not Gay (TM) despite being infatuated with the male lead. How convenient that said daughter turns out to be a female version of her dad!

all I remember was near the end his best friend who was basically in love with him was so happy those two had a daughter 'cause it meant he could get with the girl version of his friend when she was old enough.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, ew. I guess that explains why OP compared it to the ending of the Twilight series

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
...the daughter Best Friend Dude raised like his own, no less. 'Cause... IDK, the main couple couldn't be bothered, or something? They're all, "Welp, we're busy with Important Grown-Up stuff now. Hey, let's just have Best Friend Dude do all the actual parenting of our kids for us! He's an artist, so he has the time; it's not like being an artist is a real job after all."
