Welcome to superhero comics.

Though, honestly, I don't know that it's so much about being "progressive" in this case as trying to keep Selina morally ambiguous--and darker than #c0c0c0. Hint that she's a DepravedBisexual, maybe, or at least reinforce that she lives without regard for conventional norms of behavior.

I think this would mostly be true and would fit into the era of her creation. She rather just does not care and goes in with her instincts and against what's expected of her. Rather than putting her into a sexuality mold, she's a wild card.

Yeah I'm with you OP. Harely finally being canon bi? Great! (I'd prefer it wasn't Nu52 Harley, but it's something). This? This just feels forced.

I think Harleen has been canon bi for a while, Noodles.

Wait, what? Harley is canon bi now? I haven't been following nu52 very closely -- I missed this! (It's been my headcanon for ages, ever since that one episode with Harley and Ivy in Batman: The Animated Series. I was a little kid and didn't know what shipping was, but man did I ship that. 8yo me wanted to write the continued adventures of Harley and Ivy, although it's probably best for my embarrassment squick that I never did.)

That's superhero comics in general for you.

I will say DC has been making great strides in creating comics for a broader audience than straight white dudes, though. I just don't know if I have the heart to pick up Catwoman again after Ann Nocenti's run was so, so terrible.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-03-07 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've been burned so many times by characters I like getting thrown into production hell, retconned during "events," or used as plot fodder that I just don't trust the Big Two anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-07 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, it wouldn't be the first time they did something just to seem progressive.

But hell, it's better than nothing.

Wait, if they don't do it, it's "WE DEMAND REPRESENTATION!" But when they actually give representation, it's, "THIS IS PATRONIZING!"

Come on. Make up your mind.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-07 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
So we should just accept whatever representation they deign to give us and bow and scrape and be thankful for it?

Fuck you.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-07 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please.

Not all representation is good representation. If it's done like shit, then it's shit. If a character is confirmed "bi", kisses a girl once, and then it's never brought up at all, again, ever? And are only seen kissing dudes the rest of the time? Then it's shit. It deserves to be criticized and people have every right to point it out and demand better. Glee is a prime example of "trying to be representative and fucking it up".

I don't follow this comic so I'm not sure what the situation was, but people are undoubtedly going to be bitter. Especially with comics, where they retcon things left and right. DC has a pretty bad track record, too. I can't blame anyone for being suspicious of motive.

So don't act like people have to shut up and be happy when big name media throw half-assed shit in their faces in the name of representation.

If you write a crappy lgbt character, then uh yeah I think we have every right to complain and critique it. Everyone does it for straight characters, why are lgbt characters suddenly off limits?
Don't tell me you're one of those people who think lgbt fans need to be 100% happy and accepting of everything ever and should never ever complain or voice any concern.
Because if so, please stop.

you're right, the LGBT community should graciously feed on any scraps thrown our way and never expect better

I don't know why you got such angry replies. If it's done badly, sure, critique and complain away, but OP does not know if this is gonna be bad. They're just being suspicious of any representation - which is understandable but it hardly helps if people are so derisive each time an LGBT character pops up. It's like you said: don't do it, people complain; do it, people don't even wait to see how it's done, they just make cynical comments like many upthread.

Haven't read the comic so I don't know how the reveal was executed, but Catwoman being bi sounds good to me.

+1

And it's being written by Genevieve Valentine, whose The Girls at the Kingfisher Club was one of my favorite books of last year. Almost every time I've tried to read DC comics before, I've regretted it, but with a bi Catwoman as incentive, I may just have to try one more time.

I'm glad it made people happy, but those same people are blatantly ignoring that it was still a half-assed excuse of representation. You can be happy that there was confirmation but still criticize the fact that it was done horribly.

Image: Catwoman kissing a woman with short, dark hair

Text: I want to be excited about Catwoman being canonically bi, but somehow I can’t stop feeling like it’s just a cheap “Look, we’re progressive!” copout attempt from DC.

OP comes across as a straight person complaining about non-straight characters in stuff they like, so the direction this thread took is weird.
