I know nothing about the particular example but it's possible for people to be pretty awesome in one area but still disappointing in another. I think that describes most people actually. Maybe you're right and this person is getting unfairly painted with the same brush as the worst of the GamerGaters, or maybe they really do support the worst of them in spite of their good points.

Do you mean "people who identify as gamergaters" or "a gamergater group", because I can point to people who ID as gamergaters doing some pretty kickass things, but I want to know where the goalposts are first.

I know people who identify with gamer gate have done some good stuff. Me personally I can only say I contributed to the Cytherea thing, which I came to learn about through GG, and a bunch of other good causes have passed through my radar thanks to GG, but I'm broke as fuck so aside from the Cytherea thing which really hit me, I can't say I'v really personally been apart of any of it. but there's the TFYC thing. there's blowing the whistle on that Anita harasser (not really a Good thing, just a thing that's expected of any decent human being, but it wasn't Vile). There was that pornstar who did a gig to raise a load of money for that gaming charity.

People who are against a group can't really be treated as a group though, unless they slap that label on themselves which is just stupid. It's a movement, therefore people are presenting themselves as like-minded on a lot of things, and a bunch of different people having a negative opinion of that organization.

Sargon (the person in question) has repeatedly stated that he supports women and minorities in gaming so long as they have the talent to make it in the industry/play the games and has also repeatedly called for those who have sent death/rape threats or otherwise broken the law to be reported to the police. As far as I am aware all he really does is make YT videos stating his opinions on current events, with a lot of focus on GG--which he is a quite famous and quite vehement proponent and defender of--but also with a lot of railing against 'SJW's all over.

Some of those videos have had a vaguely conspiracy-theory feel to them in regards to politics he disagrees with being 'pushed onto gaming', but as far as I know he hasn't said anything too crazy. However, he makes no claims to having much other than contempt for Anita Sarkeesian and her allies, and I would surmise he has a much lower bar for 'SJW's than the majority of this comm; he identifies as liberal, but is far more centrist in his politics than most people here.

You do know what he's doing there, right?

He's presuming that a lot of the women out there--mainly women who disagree with him or actually prioritize including female and minority characters--are the ones who don't deserve to be there, whereas the ones who agree with him are. Gamergaters do this pretty much constantly.

It's sort of an "I support you unless you make me mildly uncomfortable, whereupon you become an extremist" sort of angle.

Also he wouldn't give a shit about Rotterham if the perpetrators weren't Muslim. Not enough of a shit to make videos anyway.

Everyone doe this constantly. I've seen this more from the aGG side than anywhere else but I'm not going to say "aGG do this constantly" because I'm pretty sure it applies to the worst people across the board.

In fact what you're doing there is judging him, assuming a particular viewpoint of his, without proof, based on nothing more than "Those people always do that"

How do you know? What proof, what form from this guy do you have to back that up, other than your bias against anyone calling themselves a GG supporter? "If this was different he wouldn't XYZ" If you don't have the supernatural power to see into XYZ dimension where things are different, you've no business to judge or dismiss someone based on what you believe.

What I can do, is see into this dimension, where aGG, people who claim to be against harassment of women ARE harassing women who don't believe the same things as them. What I can do is see into this dimention, where the only people complaining about Arthur Chu and his horrible rape related shit are the GG side, and the aGG seem to give no fucks (Not enough fucks to make videos anyway).

Assholes on both sides pulling immature shit and arguing from nothing more than their own bias. pick whichever side speaks to you personally, but for fuck sake, don't be one of those assholes. We have enough of those assholes.

Meh, it's kind of this complicated chain in which there was a video game research group, and Sargon had the minutes of one of their meetings or the transcript of one of their meetings or something like that where they were talking about how they could make video games more feminist, and one of them wrote an article denouncing the 'gamer' identity, then someone wrote a tumblr post talking about misogyny in games that referred to the article, and the post was linked to as a source by the 'gamers are dead' articles, which was supposedly evidence that a cabal of feminist academics were trying to force feminism into gaming and means this research group started GamerGate. Or something.

It was kind of a tenuous series of links and most people think he's reading way too much into things; though there is a feeling in that crowd that certain elements of the (specifically indie) industry were very cliquey and identifying as a feminist or at least not criticising feminism was the only way to get into the clique--again, I don't know how accurate that perception is--but I didn't mean that he was railing against the inclusion of any actual people in the industry or characters in the games purely for their minority status.

Personally, I prefer his non-GG related videos.
