so my friend's book is finally published

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-03-09 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That means I finally get to pimp the shit out of it!

You can get it for cheapies hyeah.

She's been working on this for months and I'm super proud of her! She's been having a rough start to the year (on top of living hand to mouth for years) and is in especially dire financial straits right now, so I really hope this book is successful. And I'm sure a lot of you would be happy to read genuinely LGBT-friendly sci-fi :)

You can follow her on tumblr as well to keep abreast of future projects!

The book description is a bit hard to follow. My eyes kept glazing over the first line.

This part seems all right:

Karin Ashley lives a lonely life that feels hollow, with a job she hates and a family she loves but can't quite figure out. Called in late one night to respond to an electronic break-in at

But it falls apart again afterwards.

Awesome cover, though.

Congrats, asshole, you got me to read the book description, just to be contrary.

didn't your dad ever teach you "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"

That's not very nice of you to say, you know.

you're joking right? if not, you need to get out more

More to the point, the first chapter has nothing in it to make me want to keep reading. I'd have no patience for that amount of constant pissing and moaning IRL, I sure as hell don't want it in my SF.

My congratulations to your friend! Publishing a book that you've been working on is a great accomplishment. If I have the inclination I'll check it out.

you should give her a good review, I think that helps more.

Congrats to your friend! If I might venture a suggestion, as a person who browses a LOT of books but has limited time for reading, a punchier summary can make all the difference. Your friend's plot summary tends to speak in generalities, e.g. "This is a story about magic, cohabitation, loneliness...", "a supernatural world hidden from the eyes of modern civilization", "a lonely life that feels hollow, with a job she hates and a family she loves but can't quite figure out", "a hidden world of legends, supernatural beings and plenty of corruption, both literal and metaphorical" (that's twice the phrase "hidden world has been used, BTW), "Fantastic powers and reality-bending magic", etc. etc. Basically, this description is screaming "THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! AND VERY COOL! AND AMAZING!" without giving the reader any actual glimpse of what is so amazing. As a reader, I don't want to be told a book is awesome, I want to be shown why it is. The summary does a lot of hinting, but offers no juicy details. It could describe any number of urban fantasies, and your friend definitely does not want something so generic. When browsing, I want to know:

* Who's the protagonist and what's so special about them?
* What's this universe like? You can't show me everything in a short description, but give me a taste.
* What's the conflict? Some permutation of good vs. evil, obviously, but what?

Try this:

Karin Ashley's lonely life as a [her job here] is rudely interrupted by a late night break in at the office. Armed with nothing but a stapler and her wits, she's forced to confront a demon from the seventh circle of hell and a hidden world seething with corruption and forbidden arts. The magic sword she finds will come in handy, but the real question is: will she have to fight all the forces of the dark underworld alone?

That's not perfect and obviously I had to fudge the details because I haven't read your friend's book, but you get the idea.

I relayed your suggestions to her!

I don't think a punchier summary would do much good unless the first chapters were made unavailable for preview.

That would be impossible. The screen is way too small. I actually hate reading on anything other than my computer, and i'd still dl and print out stuff if i had a printer. So.

Um - meaning - other than books, i don't read on anything else. I have lots of books, though. I wish there was an option to get a printed version of a lot of ereader only things.

SF with a lesbian couple as the protags? Sold.

And pffft at the trolls. Speaking as someone who genuinely wants to see more queer SFF, thank you for posting the link! :)

It's nice that you're easily pleased, but it's not trolling to slog through the available sample and decide that it's awful. And...it kind of is. Lesbian couple as protags can't rescue this dreck.

Wow. You can tell whether the entirety of a book will be decent based on a few pages you read? Impressive.* Even more impressive is how you're replying to everyone on this thread who responds with any kind of interest mocking them or the book. Do you get paid for this? And if you're the troll who made the Cassie Claire comment, then I kindly invite you to fuck the hell off.

*Even if it does suck, it's my money to choose to spend. Again. Fuck off.
