Online auctions

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone sell stuff on ebay or its ilk? How do you go about pricing the stuff you're selling?

I have a mix of clothes, jewellery and homewares that I want to sell. All of them are quie in 'fashion' (because I bought them in the 90s and apparently that's what we're doing again now), so it seems as if I should try and sell them for a decent price? IDK.

Any tips appreciated.

Just compare to what other people are selling and undercut them by a bit. Take into account how much shipping it would cost you to send it. Take great pictures. Be detailed (it helps with searches).

Price for what you want and if it doesn't sell, you'll know it's to high. Alternatively, see what similar things go for and price accordingly.

If you're using ebay, then browse around for similar listings to the things you want to sell, and see what they're selling for -- and see if they're selling at all, or if there's very little interest. I haven't used it for a while, but you used to be able to search for completed listings, which is sometimes more useful than active listings.

It's also a good idea to have a rough idea of the minimum you'd accept for each item. Comparing other auctions lets you see if that's realistic. If you still want more than your items sell for on Ebay, then maybe hunt around for a more specialist site, or try selling your items directly if you have a blog/LJ/Tumblr. I don't even bother with Ebay now for any fandom merch, I sell direct through my Tumblr instead.

I agree with looking around for comparable prices, and if you do set it too high, worst thing that happens is it doesn't sell, so lower the price and try again.

I can say that I probably wouldn't pay a "decent price" for used clothes from the 90s. Depends on what you mean by decent price I guess but considering it's possible to get new clothes for cheap, I don't think I'd ever pay more than a couple bucks for used things unless they were extremely high quality. But hey, doesn't hurt to try and see if there are any takers, just be sure to be honest with your product description.

What others said, plus:

There are unfortunately plenty of people who bid, but have no intention of paying, so put up a mention that you expect to be paid within four or five days or you'll resell the item. You can always use the "buy now" option instead of the usual bidding.

I sell stuff online (but not on Ebay).

Pricing: depends on buying price and the state they are in. Take a few days and research what similar items sell for. If the jewelry is real precious metals it doesn't really diminish much in value. Taking a flattering photo increases chance of selling for a higher price.

I've been an ebay seller for years, and the only thing I can add that I don't think anyone else might have told you is that there are a ton of scammers out there, so be careful. Ebay has changed its policies in recent years to be less pro-seller, more pro-buyer (in other words, if something turns into an issue, they're going to take the buyer's side, even if the buyer ripped you off) so bear that in mind. You can't even leave negative feedback for buyers anymore.

But yeah, what everyone else said: price things around the same price everyone else is selling at, but also, consider the absolute minimum you'd be willing to let it go for, and set your initial price well above that. That way you have some room to negotiate, or reduce prices later if it doesn't sell (oftentimes buyers will watch items they think are slightly too expensive and buy if there's a price drop.)
