RIP Sir Pterry

Will people start wearing the lilac two months early this year?

If I could get my hands on some.

Jesus this has devastated me. it's not just the death of a great man, and that would bum me out bad enough, he was fucking awesome. It's the death of a whole world. Discworld has always been my place to retreat to, a place of comfort when rela world was too horrible to face and now it's gone. selfish I know but it really has shattered me.

I know it's awful, but in a way, I'm kind of glad. I watched my grandparents deal with my Granddad's Alzheimers, and it was one of the worst things ever.

I'm glad that he's not suffering anymore.

I'm not sure there's anything awful about being glad someone is no longer suffering and is at peace.

That's really the sick thing about Alzheimer's, once you've got it, all that's left is the waiting, and it ruins lives (and families) in a way few other diseases do.

Same. My step-grandma had it.

It is sad.

however, at the same time, I think it's lessened in some respect by the fact that he had been ill and that we knew this was going to come. It feels like I've had more time to get ready for it and it feels like.... at least his suffering is over, I guess.

What a brilliant man, what a life.

How do they rise up.

A terrible loss.

This was the first thing I heard about this morning. It's not even dawn yet and I've already cried more buckets than I knew I had in me ;-; I'm reading The Fifth Elephant today. Just picked up a Discworld book to read, they always make me feel better when I'm sad, and this is no different. Well, sort of. My face gets wet every few pages.

I started grieving when I heard about his dementia. ...This just seems like a conclusion more than anything now. People with dementia make up half of my work day and it never gets any easier to watch the progression.

I hope Sir Pratchett was still himself when he went; that he retained enough to give a proper farewell.

+1

GNU Terry Pratchett.
What a great guy.

But, we still have his books. Which ones are your favourites, everyone?

The Colour of Magic and Lords and Ladies, for me. And all of the Tiffany Aching books.

I know the best way to honor him is to read his books. I have a lot of the Discworld and I should start with that. But I can't. I haven't felt the desire to read in a good 4-5 years now. I should honor him and I can't.

I was just talking about wanting to read the Discworld series last night, so I was really surprised. (I knew nothing about him and have never read his books.)

I like to think Pterry, and Death are having a lovely stroll together somewhere on the Disc now.

I've been crying a little bit off, and on throughout the day since I found out.

I was never a fan of Pratchett. He was just kind of one of those stock nerd heroes that I wasn't allowed to get into during my formative years. But my FB feed has been this endless weep; I feel bad for all his fans and I can relate. I was devastated when Douglas Adams died; I even brought a towel to school the next day.

I only met him a couple times, but he was a wonderful guy. I'll always remember that he and my dad were holding up one side of the chuppah (other side was Mike Resnick, I think, and someone else- Josepha Sherman??) when Esther Friesner & W.J. Stuzman renewed their vows at WorldCon some years ago. The utmost love and respect to a fantastic talent and great person.

When I saw his name was trending on Twitter my heart just dropped. I know what books I'll be digging out to re-read this weekend.

This poem....jayzus.
http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2ysvzb/terry_pratchett_has_died_megathread/cpcp6bg

The sun goes down upon the Ankh,
And slowly, softly fades -
Across the Drum; the Royal Bank;
The River-Gate; the Shades.

A stony circle's closed to elves;
And here, where lines are blurred,
Between the stacks of books on shelves,
A quiet 'Ook' is heard.

A copper steps the city-street
On paths he's often passed;
The final march; the final beat;
The time to rest at last.

He gives his badge a final shine,
And sadly shakes his head -
While Granny lies beneath a sign
That says: 'I aten't dead.'

The Luggage shifts in sleep and dreams;
It's now. The time's at hand.
For where it's always night, it seems,
A timer clears of sand.

And so it is that Death arrives,
When all the time has gone...
But dreams endure, and hope survives,
And Discworld carries on.
