That second paragraph is the important bit. Tumblr is a terrible, terrible echo chamber

+1

First comment is already proving the secret true, this thread will be great.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is no more an echo chamber than any other blog platform.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Other blogs don't make it so easy to spread false information. All it takes is literally one click.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, gosh, one click to spread false info. As opposed to two clicks, or having to type up your own false information before clicking. Tumblr really is uniquely Satan compared to every other blog platform.

One click, and it's VERY VERY difficult to correct false information because of the lack of a workable comment system.

So, yeah. It's actually a pretty big difference.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's NEVER been easy to correct false information. From Facebook posts to Live Journal post to chain emails to chain snail mail to the beginning of time.

"Besides, as the vilest Writer has his Readers, so the greatest Liar has his Believers; and it often happens, that if a Lie be believ’d only for an Hour, it has done its Work, and there is no farther occasion for it. Falsehood flies, and the Truth comes limping after it; so that when Men come to be undeceiv’d, it is too late; the Jest is over, and the Tale has had its Effect…" ~ Jonathan Swift

No, it's not always easy. But on tumblr it's basically impossible. On Facebook or LJ/DW, you can go to the original post and read all the comments. On Tumblr if you add a comment it will never be connected to the original post, meaning if a piece of misinformation is shared it can reach thousands of people and even if hundreds try to counteract it those thousands might never see it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Please tell me this way you have to correct false information anywhere else? Because I want to know.

I do get great enjoyment with my daily scroll through my facebook feed posting Snopes links to every Obama Put Out Kill Order On Anyone Celebrating Christmas, and Cinnamon Cures HIVCancerbola, and 1 Share = 1 PRAYER!!!! 4 Sick Kids Ignore if u want them to DIE!!!!

But I'm aware that at best I get "Snopes is a less reliable source than facebook!!!" and generally it just gets deleted.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more like, you can edit your tumblr post, but the reblogged versions don't change to reflect the edits.

You can edit your posts in other blogs and have more people see the newer version, compared to tumblr, where most people will only ever read reblogged versions of your post.

Incidentally, I think this was the reason why Andrew Hussie of MSPAdventures fame, gave up on his tumblr? People kept reblogging his posts and editing them to make it sound like he said all sorts of crazy shit, and because not everyone went to his tumblr page to see the original posts, it got out of hand.

Snopes is a less reliable source than facebook!!!

lol what??????

Also your FB feed sounds pretty crazy. o.O

But anyway, on FB you can always go back to the original post (unless someone shared it separately which is less likely since that takes more effort) and try to counteract it. People can delete it, but if they don't it stays on the original post.

And anyway we're talking about negligent spread of misinformation, not purposeful. If someone is actively trying to stop people from spreading the truth it will always be much harder.

I'd say twitter is worse. One click retweets, bad for keeping track of who replied to which tweet, almost universally used so you get a lot of internet-illiterate middle age people who can't tell a satire newspaper from the Times...

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh twitter is MUCH worse. Shit gets spread and things go downhill much faster there, because it's such a frenetic platform. It also seems like it's much harder to stop the spirals and dogpiles on twitter BECAUSE it's so damn fast.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. Use twitter as a news aggregator and it works just fine. As a soapbox - not so much.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I use tumblr just to follow porn blogs and t works just fine. There's no soap boxes, drama, or bad info on my dashboard, so I guess that means it never happens anywhere else on tumblr and I can just say "nah" to everyone who says it does. Because if I don't experience it myself, it's not real!

That's exactly what I would say about Tumblr, though.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-03-15 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll agree that twitter is worse, although that's not saying much. So is facebook which combines tumblr's lack of a filter, reblogging, and even more compulsive editing.

Certain elements of tumblr though. I'm reading Echopraxia by Peter Watts, (of the, ___ sucks and everyone dies school of hard science fiction) and there's an chapter where the poor untransformed biologist discovers that the hive mind people got their transhuman intelligence by giving themselves brain cancer.

Tumblr is LGBT rights brain cancer. Possibly feminist brain cancer as well.

The specific characteristics that define tumblr, make it a Libel Machine. With the added problem that, to debunk crap, you'll have to take it to exterior places (forums, blogs, reddit, LJ, what have you), where the intended target most likely will not hear. Trying to debunk something on tumblr is like shouting in to a black hole.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what a lot of folks are talking about with Tumblr being so terrible. Maybe it's because I'm not in Superwholock? It often feels like a lot of y'all are overreacting, or for some reason I've missed some kind of huge drama that everybody else knows about.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, there's plenty of drama over there, but you can avoid it if you're careful on what you follow.

However, there was also plenty of drama on LJ. If there weren't, fandom wank wouldn't have been so successful back in the day.

Well, admittedly, tumblr's UI is very hateable. I can't even use it these days, my computer slows to a crawl. I pretty much am only able to make a quick post, respond to asks/fanmail, and that's IT. Any sort of reading or catching up makes my computer weep little digital tears.
