I have no idea what a lot of folks are talking about with Tumblr being so terrible. Maybe it's because I'm not in Superwholock? It often feels like a lot of y'all are overreacting, or for some reason I've missed some kind of huge drama that everybody else knows about.

Part of the problem though is that with tumblr it's concentrated and isolated and constantly feeds off itself. When the crazies feed off each other, they get crazier. Like another anon said, it's an echo chamber.

It's also hard to make an effective counter to something that's misinformed or stupid or just plain wrong on Tumblr. On an old-fashioned blog, a comment in response is just as prominent as any other comment, and easily gets spotted by someone reading the comments. On Tumblr, the best you can do is reblog and add a rebuttal -- which gets drowned in all the likes and uncritical reblogs, and only has any hope at all of spreading if you've already got a lot of followers who might reblog you.

Honestly a lot of the desire for drama seems to have carried over from older sites, as well as the obsession with chronicling it. And as always, it really depends on who you associate with.

Thats what been annoying me about f!s lately, acting like tumblr is uniquely terrible and the worst place on the web when there's so many other places just as bad or worse. Like, I get that most people here came from LJ and tumblr killed that site, but the hate-boner for tumblr is getting old. Yeah it's a shit-hole of a place but every social media site on the web past and present have awful elements about it, including all the old social sites we used to go on back in the day.

The thing is that snapewives are crazy in a fandom way, but a lot of tumblr ideology bleeds through to real life.

Couldn't agree more, especially with the second part -- using Tumblr as its intended (without having to effectively break the site via add-ons just to make it functional) makes it so much harder to avoid the crazies, and so much easier for the crazies to get validation from other crazies.

In my old fandoms on LJ many of the more batshit people would lock/filter their own posts so that only fellow enlightened people could see their glory, and those horrible haturs who just didn't understand their loopy opinions couldn't get in the way with you know, facts or logic or ratiional, critical thinking. Of course it won't be true for other fandoms, but at least ime the nutjobs kind of policed themselves on other platforms, under the guise of being speshul snowflakes with their speshul points of view. Not so on Tumblr, where Being a Nutjob in Public now apparently earns brownie points.

Someone upthread mentioned blocking/blacklisting -- blocking only works well if the people have bothered tagging in the first place, which doesn't always happen, and even then I've had permutations/misspellings (sometimes deliberate) of the thing I'm blocking that sneak through anyway.

Snapewives were so fascinating to me. I really enjoyed reading their creepy essays on their ~Severus~ as the true hero of the series and how terrible JK Rowling is terrible for not understanding his depth.

I know this is sort of off topic but I've always been curious. When people claim to be married to someone on the astral plane how does that work?

Like...do you just spend your free time sitting on your bed in a trance imagining all the kinky sex/giving birth to your kids/raising them? I think I actually saw a godwife blog along those lines once. I guess it's no more or less valid than a lot of hobbies but it seems like people get a little too invested in the fantasy.
