The first time you saw a show jump the shark

I'd say Lost, when they tried to build a church on the island. If that's not a big enough shark for you, then Heroes and its . . . whatever the hell it was doing.

The first show that I was actually watching that jumped the shark was House.

I don't watch that much TV, but I used to watch American Idol with my mom. It used to be pretty good, though it started to deteriorate years ago when it became more clearly political. Simon leaving was the final nail in the coffin IMO. Mom still watches it every year but I've lost interest.

Idol definitely started going downhill when the behind-the-scenes manipulation became more and more apparent. It started to get way too obvious who were the producer favorites and who were supposed to be the cannon fodder. I'd probably consider Simon's last season the shark jump, I think that was the first season where not only the winner but most of the contestants were just totally dull and forgettable.

Supernatural. Maybe when they brought Sam back after Season 5 ended (or how they brought him back). Definitely when they brought Cas back.

As far as I'm concerned, Supernatural ends with season 5.

Sliders. That show was so good for two(?) seasons then... holy fuck it got bad. The breaking point was when they killed off prof. Arturo and replaced him with that woman I shall not name. After that it was just one shit heap of an episode after another.

Oh, yes, I forgot Sliders. Though I liked parts of season 4. But mostly it was a train wreck after season 2. I felt so bad for John Rhys-Davies.

Oh god, Sliders. So much this.

I'm sure there were others before this that I've seen but the only one that comes to mind at the moment is Grey's Anatomy when Meredith drowns and is dead for like...what, an hour or something and then gets revived and is totally fine (arguably, it could have jumped the shark when Izzy cut Denny's LVAD wire, eventually resulting in his death, and she only gets suspended from the hospital for it, but it definitely jumped it with the Meredith thing). The show got really shitty for a while after that, but I actually started liking it again around the time where they had the season finale with the guy who shot up the hospital. I started disliking it again later, but that's Grey's Anatomy for you.

Grey's definitely goes up and down. I can't stop watching. This season has been pretty good, though.

There were ones before that I don't remember now but Heroes for sure.

Family Matters was probably the first for me. I can't quite pinpoint when exactly it happened because I haven't seen the show in years, but it was probably around the time when the show started getting some full blown sci-fi elements (like when Urkel built that time machine or when he brought out his alter ego Stefan using some formula and eventually straight up cloned himself). The plotlines were actually pretty entertaining imo, but I would definitely say that the show jumped the shark and had a major change of tone

BUT STEFAN WAS SO FINE! Although it helped it get plotty, because it was really trying to (i might be reaching, seeing as this conjecture has only happened in the last 30 seconds) explore the idea of what makes somebody who they are, and the value of Urkel and that of Stefan, are they two separate people?

Also, the urkel-bot clone always made me feel uncomfortable. He seemed pervy.

The first time I ever watched a show jump the shark was when Fonzie from Happy Days wanted to do a waterski leap over shark. Never has jump the shark been more literal.

Either Xena or Alias, I can't remember which was first. Thought the later seasons of both went crackers.

V: The Final Battle, followed by the original series. The magic alien baby girl. Just wtf. Then the series was a hot mess and ended nowhere. One of the biggest frustrations of my childhood. It was so screwy that I really didn't give the reboot much of a chance a few years ago.

The War of the Worlds 80's series (With that one guy from Predator!) that had a terrific first season and then got totally recast and jerked god-knew-where for the second was hugely disappointing, too.

Buffy. When everyone went to the same college and stuck around in Sunnydale. (Season 4) It was all down hill from high school graduation.

I was going to say Merlin, but I can't actually think of any particular, singular moment - it was a very consistent yet gradual decline in quality, and one which started pretty early. I guess if I had to pick a moment/event, though, it would be that first time skip between Seasons 2 and 3. And every inter-season timeskip just made things even worse.

The most definitive jump-the-shark show I've seen yet is Teen Wolf, Season 4. The mystery was convoluted but at least engaging...until the reveal. The whole thing about the Big Bad basically being no one seemed to be just desperate reaching to me. It was especially a let down after the awesomeness of Season 3. The particular moment was probably the very beginning, when they randomly de-aged Derek - then re-aged him - with no explanation whatsoever.

On top of the convoluted mystery making little to no sense, a lot of the emotional development potential was completely wasted. Most notably, Stiles and Malia should have been a lot more emotionally unstable, and it's a damn shame the show didn't take the opportunity to explore a slightly unhealthy relationship between them.

That said, I did love how they touched upon financial troubles so much in Season 4, especially medical care and PSATs. Like, finally, a show that articulates the real reason I'm afraid of going to the doctor's - I don't give a shit about intimidating medical procedures, I give a shit about how much they cost. And yay for a show that treats test stress seriously, instead of just playing it off like teenagers getting worked up about nothing. If a single test is the deciding factor in whether or not someone goes to college, then hell yes they are going to stress out over it and fuck anyone who says it's nothing to get worked up about.

(PSATs are kind of a sore spot for me - at the time I took mine, I was told that it's nothing to stress over, so I didn't study at all and dicked around for half the test because I found it pretty easy, and assumed my high score was nothing more than a diagnostic and school-ranking instrument. I didn't find out until two years later - WAY too late - that the PSATs actually qualify you for a lot of scholarships, including the National Merit Scholarship - if I had actually tried on that test, then I could have gotten a partial or even full ride scholarship to college and wouldn't be in the current financial mess I'm in right now.)
