There's a spider right by the kitchen sink in my apartment.

I leave it there because it kills all the ants trying to get in.

I've named it Spiderbro and I quite like it.

I don't tell anyone though because I feel like they'd think I'm weird.

I think that's awesome, actually. :D

Can't get a pet so Spiderbro is the only other living thing I have in the apartment.

There's a huge pile of dead ants underneath his nest below the windowsill. He does his job well.

I'm glad you like him, though. :)

I've done this with spiders before. (Not bothered to kill them in my place, and give them names. One by my window would catch and kill mosquitoes. Loved her.)

I did this (w/o the naming) in my old condo. Spiders can be cool.

I hate spiders with a passion, and am terrified of them when they're mobile - we have big black/brown hunter spiders that crawl all over the place, and every time I see one near me I end up like that lady with the broom in the old Tom & Jerry cartoons, standing on a stool and screaming. I hate them.

That being said, though, when spiders stay in their webs and/or at least out of my sight, I'm okay to let them be. There was a spider on a web right behind my bedside locker that was there for years, because we had a gentleman's agreement that he didn't bother me and I wouldn't bother him. There's another one on one of the skylights, he keeps bugs out in summer for me. There are quite a few of them around the house, actually. The ones in the kitchen are especially useful. They've just ... They just have to stay in one place where I don't have to look at them, and they're fine. It's the big scuttling ones that kill me. The ones that drop onto my pillow in the night or crawl under my feet or ...

Anyway! Spiders holding fort and doing their jobs, that's all good. Tell Spiderbro thumbs up from me.

tw: huntsman spider story (Humans: 1 Spider: 0)

DA

Oh, now, huntsman spiders, those definitely need to be killed with fire because that's the only thing that can destroy them. I once looked up from the computer, and met the gaze of a huntsman hanging out directly over my head, and it was a big enough baddie, it could have done the facehugger thing from Alien, if it'd had a mind to.

Like any sane, sensible soul, I yelled for backup, got it, and between the two of us, we managed to murder the sucker into a tiny curled-up ball of dead thing. But it took at least four whacks.

TL;DR: Why I hate huntsmans.

I also leave all the spiderbros in my homes alive so they keep away ants and silverfish and whatever else might want to wander in.

I especially love the little jumping spiders who live in the windows and take care of the flies for me.

I have eleventy billion spiders in, around and on my house every spring, summer and fall. That ain't even a joke, I could count the ones on the side of my house and easily reach 40 or 50. If I spot them in the house, or in the doorways, I fucking kill them. They should stay outside where they belong.

House centipedes? I let those ugly bastards live 'cuz they eat spiders and leave me alone.

Re: confessions thread

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I like house centipedes and crane flies.

"Spiders" is a big category, and they're not all the same. I don't generally kill them, though. I've never had to.

If it has 8 legs it's a spider and it is an intruder in the sanctity of my home and for that it must die.

house centipedes are so cool. I also honestly think they're really pretty.

in my house I was the only one who would take them out. my mom, brother, and sister freaked when they saw them (my dad less so, but he wasn't home as often). if I had a dollar for every time I heard "[DP]! There's a million legged bug!!!" and picked it up to take it outside...

You sir, are a godsend.

Though I generally leave spiders alone. I KNOW they are in my apartment, but so long as they STAY hidden, we're good. If they EVER enter my bubble? THEY DED.

That's cute. I usually keep at least one spider inside, especially during summer, because it kills the mosquitoes. (It's those Daddy longlegs types of spiders and I call all of them Agnes.)

Daddy longlegs aren't actually spiders! They're related, though. Do you know which ones you had? /curious

I confess, I don't know much about spiders - I also had to rely on Wikipedia for a rough translation. I think it's the ones in the first picture of the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholcidae

I keep those around too! I've got one in my bathroom right now.

The best thing about them is that they don't just kill mosquitoes and flies, they kill bigger, more dangerous spiders too.

That's cool! (Lucky me, I don't really have any dangerous spiders in my country but definitely bigger ones. It's pretty cool what those thin little fellows can do!)

In Australia, we call those ones "good spiders".

If it won't kill you and it's providing a service, you just leave it alone.

I like that you named yours though.

Re: confessions thread

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
When I first moved here, I was shocked by how many spiders there were. I wpuld come home late at night, park my car, and then the next morning there'd be spider webs all across the wheel wells and tires. Wisconsin is like The Land if Spiders.

Trying to kill them was futile and none of them are dangerous, so I gave up. Now it's become a habit of mine never to kill spiders. I was washing my kitchen walls yesterday and I actually washed AROUND a spider and was careful not to send any drips its way. I don't have any special love for spiders but it's like killing them somehow became taboo for me.

I've got Spot the jumping spider who lives in my kitchen plant. Granted I told the world via facebook/tumblr about him but no-one seems to have thought I was wierd.

Spot is a good spider, it catches the flies!
