Keep on ignoring the actual point of the "boycott" (white fandom's words, not POC's) and continue blaming mean scary black women that your mini series...wasn't more popular?

As for me, I'm Mexican and hated this show for being dead dull and, despite claiming to be progressively feminist, STILL making everything about White Males. I didn't need much more motivation to stop watching, but seeing white fandom harass black MCU fans drove the final nail in the coffin.

Not so much disagreeing with you as just springboarding off this:

I think one of the things that makes internet (and particularly tumblr) discourse so frustrating is that every narrative is hopelessly fractured and everyone's perspective is inextricably singular such that, in just about every Internet dispute, both sides think that the other side is the one acting like dicks and causing an issue

so, like, in this case, someone who likes Agent Carter is going to claim that POC fans started shit by being intensely critical of the show, and you're going to claim that white fandom is harassing black MCU fans, and there's no way to adjudicate who's right. In fact, there's probably no one who's right, and both are accurate depictors of reality as viewed from a specific point of view

Basically the only solution is to end fandom

There's a point to the boycott? Cause frankly, it seems like bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's funny because I remember someone asked a SJW whether it was alright that they hoped Agent Carter would crash and burn and they were reassured and cooed that OF COURSE it's okay.

When I asked if it would be okay for white women to boycott and hope for Black Panther to crash and burn if it had no or poor representation of women, I never got a response.

Funny how that works.

Christ. How many years do you have left in high school?

None. Getting my PhD though! :D

But yes, BRING ON THE AD HOMINEMS!

Considering how T'Challa has some real lothario tendencies in parts of the comic, no representation might actually be the safter route to take him, sadly.

I mean, we know there's Dora Milaje in it and they... well lets just say they might not fly well.

Yeah, there was no "boycott". Some WOC said they weren't interested or still felt alienated, but not boycotting it.

It's going to happen when the shows that are said to be representation of all women everywhere star a white woman. Cause yeah, there are going to be women who will feel left out of it when they already feel left out of the societal "universal experience for women".

(Anonymous) 2015-03-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll confess:

I find it REALLY hard to be sympathetic to black women/Latina women/Asian women in this particular case because they get SO MUCH MORE representation than I do. I basically am NEVER represented in media.

But I don't go and boycott shows with protagonists that are black women/Latina women/Asian women.

It just feels incredibly childish to me. I don't know. :/

Feels like another manifestation of the oppression olympics.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-20 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, I agree that it's bad that there's no Arab women in media, but at a certain point, I think you're just perpetuating the oppression olympics yourself.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I probably do, I'll admit. Especially here because it's where I come to vent.

But I just...I'll admit that I'm horrifically jealous.

And so when I'm enjoying something and people who get more than I do have to dump on it, it gets under my skin.

+1

this just sounds like you're saying representation for her isn't as important as representation for black/latina/asian people

It's going to happen when the shows that are said to be representation of all women everywhere star a white woman.

Do any of those shows claim to actually be universally representative of women? I haven't heard it, though if they do, that's obnoxious and dumb.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I think part of the problem is that even if shows themselves don't claim it, others will claim it on their behalf.

For instance, I don't think Girls ever claimed to be anything other than a depiction of a few very specific people. But critics were certainly more than happy to claim it as a representation of the entire experience of a gender and / or generation.

Did anyone connected to the show ever claim that?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Are you ignoring the fact that the star is mixed race and there are tons of people of different ethnicity in the show? Did all those people cease to exist because there are a few white men in roles they would have been historically?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Of course they are.

From what I have observed of the issue of Agent Carter, she doesn't count because she ~Not Black~.
