Active Fandoms

What constitutes an active fandom to you?

Like, how many people need to sign up for a fest? Or how few authors/artists would it take? etc.

I'd say maybe more than a couple of author/artists to be active, or if that couple updated regularly and people consistently viewed or commented. If they're consuming the media, I think it's active.

Only have two fandoms that are big enough to have fests, but I don't participate, I'm more in the smaller ones.

One where content is updated semi regularly, either by fans or by the company.

I'm beginning to think I have an old school version of fandom, as I hardly ever see this, but to me it's really about engagement. Fanfiction, discussion (actual discussion, not "I think Actor Mc Actorson is SO HAWT"), that sort of thing. However, I see it so rarely anymore I'm beginning to think it's just me. Or maybe just my generation of fandom.

Yes. This. This is fan activity, and you are spot on on what is not fan activity too. At the moment far too many "fan" spaces are nothing more than finding a way to headcanon a character into an LGBTQPSS POC, and then have them cuddle a self-insert OC. Followed by a scream at why are people not giving them kudos/likes.

Except when the fandom is Doctor Who, when even that would be an improvement on the current lets gather people to bitch about Moffat, and drive out anyone who finds joy in the show, approach. He's only made one misstep so far, and that one was in an attempt to placate the rabid SJWers.

Is there a fanforum with plenty of discussion on the meta of the fandom? I'll make fanforum pretty broad, it can be a website with a forum, a newsgroup, a mailing list, a webring, journalling groups, any way that fans can come together and partake of threaded discussions on the characters, settings, and creator activities.

Number of people signing up for kink art and/or slashfic is not a good sign.

I agree completely, and wish more people thought about it like that. Unfortunately there's so little of it, I'm not really sure they do.

It gets worse, as the number of those community sites fall it means there are less places to link existing ones to, so less ways to bring in new blood and crosspromote so other fans can find them, which leads to a long slow spiral.

At least 10 new fics a day.

With active meta discussions on those fics.

I've never thought of it in terms of 'this many specific authors or artists', but if new content is consistently being made and posted I consider it active. Doesn't so much matter if we're talking about fic or art or gifs or meta or posts to a community or forum, just as long as there's a steady stream of participation.

There needs to be some sort of hub for it all though, a way for new fans to find the activity in as few steps as possible.

IA with that, but I'm not sure how one would go about it. Some fandoms have (or had, anyway, back when LJ was more popular) newsletter comms for that sort of thing, where they list fic, art, meta, etc, and link it in one place. I would love if that kind of thing became popular again, but the thing is...with social media being what it is and twitter and tumblr being so stupidly popular, it would be impossible to keep track of everything. (Unless you're in a small fandom, anyway.)

:( It's tricky.

Yep, this here. If there is a constant stream of new stuff and participation, then that fandom is pretty active for me.
