(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)Sorry, a better example: Mexican Spanish vs Spain Spanish. If the canon's originally in American English, which one should you use? Probably Mexican Spanish, but are Spanish readers really going to quibble about that? Maybe.
English speakers, on the other hand, will complain until the cows come home.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 12:53 am (UTC)(link)In fact, I think the less cultural representation your language or culture has the even more nitpicky you are when it comes up, because it's hardly ever done convincingly and the next depiction might not be along for a while.
Speaking as someone from a small country, it can rankle when the next 10,000 tourists all turn up with the same misconceptions from some movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 01:58 am (UTC)(link)I think the problem is bigger in Spanish,, since no one can even agree on how it's spoken in a specific country (or even a specific region).

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 02:05 am (UTC)(link)I would be the first in complaining about the use of Mexican Spanish as a way to convey that they're speaking American English, mostly because I have a hard time understanding Mexican Spanish so the good intention of the translator would be lost for me.
IMO it's better to stick with an Spanish as neutral as possible or to use the Spanish spoken in the country that work will be distributed.
But most people also complain about using regionalisms specific to countries that are not Spain or Mexico and let's not start the eternal debate of what counts as "neutral" Spanish.
There's pretty much no right choice here, is there?
