Except more about Saward than JNT. The Cartmel era was pretty decent all considered so I'd probably put the blame on Saward around 70/30. But I agree that complaints about the Moff look ridiculous when compared to the whole thing of 80s Doctor Who.

Mind you, Moffat bringing Missy back for the opening two parter is one of his bigger boners. At least Clara is genuinely going to leave this season, thank goodness, even if they are bringing Danny back for it to happen.

He needs to learn to write to the 45 minute mark instead of the usual hour or more mark, to stop his plots being overcrowded. He also needs to let go his inner fanboy a bit. Yes some fanboy ideas are good, like the non-sequential storytelling, but some of them like the female regeneration stuff is just pure Tom Baker's talking cabbage level fanfic fodder. He needs to ask himself if what he's written sounds interesting, or just sounds "cool" (scare-quotes apply). If it is that it sounds "cool" to a fan, then it is probably a duff idea.

The series of decisions that led to Six's tenure sucking was complex and unfortunate. Poor Colin Baker. Poor... nearly everyone involved.

Colin Baker deserved better.

The audioplays are great, and he's my favourite in them.

I think a majority of Classic Who fans recognize that CBaker is actually rather good, and trying his very best with the material he was given. How much they can separate his performance from the overall mess of writing/direction/production design varies considerably.

And some of the ideas proposed for Season 23 that were jettisoned in favor of Trial of a Timelord sounded pretty promising/have later been done in Virgin Books or Big Finish format.

His eps were more fun than Five's, imho. When he was lying on a stretcher that rolled from the hill, for example, it was fun.

nayrt, but as an additional data point:

My favorites are the Seventh, Third, and Sixth Doctors. Though I don't dislike the Fourth Doctor, he's the classic-era Doctor I like the least. I'm also not a big fan of the Tenth Doctor, though I watch a lot of his episodes because I love Martha and Donna, and though I started off really liking the Eleventh Doctor, I ended up really not liking him.

I still havn't forgiven my local PBS station from canceling Tom Baker's Who in the 80s. I refuse to give them any money and hope they all rot in hell.

JNT was a disaster, yeah. (I am not a Tom Baker stan, either.)

JNT did the best he could. Yes, he could have gone earlier, but it wouldn't have saved the show. Grade was determined to axe it for not having US level production values, but wouldn't countenance equivilant budgets. It was JNT that stopped the show going off air when Tom Baker left the show too, there was a real chance that could've happened. Yes he was a publicity hound, but right then, the show needed one.

I just want to clarify that I like Six and I love Colin Baker. I chose that picture of him because it kind of looks like he's pushing JNT away or gesturing "GTFO!" to him.
