Cheer Up Thread

What do you personally do when you feel sad or anxious? The weirder the activity, the better. I feel sick with anxiety right now and my usual self-soothing methods aren't working.

Lay in bed and read angsty fic and listen to '90's country music or sad, slow Indie music.

+1 to the angsty fic. The angstier and more self-indulgent the better.

Clean things or play video games. Involving my brain in a hands-on activity forces brain activity away from the pathways involved in anxiety.

I stress bake, play the Sims 2, or watch ridiculous movies.

Currently watching 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Stress baking resulted in 65 dozen cookies in a month once.

Dance around (badly, because I can't dance) to europop or (often bad) techno remixes of songs.

These are mine, I hope at least one here works?

-Sweeping the floors or doing other sorts of cleaning.
-Watching ants go about their business.
-Playing browser games.
(Sometimes Kongregate, Newgrounds and ArmorGames have some hidden gems in there. Off the top of my head I really liked the "Henry Stickmin" series and "William and Sly 2". The fist is silly and references videogames and the second one is a very soothing platformer.
-Oh, speaking of platformers, the earlier Knytt games and An Untitled Story are free and are also chill.
-Watching scary Let's Plays (Cryaotic's YouTube LPs are specially favored because he has such a soothing voice, but I also liked AestheticGamer).
-Watch silly Let's Plays (Like the Kaizo Super Mario romhacks).
-Reading webcomics. (The Adventures of Dr. McNinja, Nedroid and Order of the Stick seem to help me the most with their brand of humor, but YMMV.)
-Reading about kind of technical stuff like the history of computer viruses and other computer things.

I listen to music and try to turn it up loud enough to drown out my thoughts. Or I watch movies or tv shows that I've seen a million times because they're comforting. Not weird but it's what I do.

I recently got a cat and petting him is the best pick-me-up ever. Really, getting a cat was a good life decision.

I named him Micheletto. Usually I just call him Miccy-Kitty. He's 3 years old, microchipped, and I adopted him from the humane society. His previous owners declawed him, but he's a sweetheart. His hobbies include sleeping, eating, vanquishing his evil toy mouse, being petted, and hiding under my bed.

Here's a picture of him sleeping. http://imgur.com/zewZ7J4

He's a wonderful kitty!

This. My cats have been so much help in picking up my spirits and quelling anxiety. When I'm in a place where there are no cats, I try to watch cat videos on youtube or something.

Sometimes I worm my way under my bed with my face shoved in a blanket that's been sprayed with lavender essential oils. Is that weird enough?
It's a very small space but I find being squashed relaxing. Squashed and suffocated.

I know there's a sciency name for the being squashed thing. They even build people-squashing machines for it.

They do! My work often involves the use of weighted blankets.

If this is helpful to you, the cheap ones are not all that expensive on amazon.

I can't find a name for why it works, but they also make clothes for dogs and cats with that concept in mind:

Doing something that involves cleaning or organizing tends to help me a lot. Even if it's something small like a single shelf, or your desk, it takes just enough thought to be distracting without being overwhelming, plus you get the sense of accomplishment and calm when you see your space neat and tidy.

Warm blankets and naps are good. So is trashy and pointless television (reality transformation stuff-house renovation, makeovers, etc.-does it for me, I have no idea why). Also non-intense video games, like those silly match/hidden object games or word puzzles are a good distraction that doesn't require too much energy.

I make more textsfromlastnight for man from uncle.

In fact, since I've been more than unusually down lately, I must have a good 50 in that poor tumblr's cue. The mods'll never know what hit 'em.

In similar vein to the TFLN-anon above me, I make A Softer World remixes. I don't really post them anywhere, but I have folders upon folders of them in my computer. I have lists of which comic fits which character from which fandom, so when I'm feeling down I can churn out 10 or more at one go, without having to pause.

Hot cup of tea and either fic or a game.

I'm having a bad weekend so I'm doing a lot of self-soothing. Still forcing myself to take the dogs for walks but aside from that I'm holing up in the house. Can't even be bothered to garden.

But I know the feelings will fade and I'll feel better eventually or something else stressful will come along :c

Sleep.

I used to play vidio games and read comics, but so many of them are fucking depressing these days.

So now I let my body shut down for 18 hours a day.

With anxiety, my most useful trick has been: make a comic about it. Seriously. I just draw a stupid scribbly comic strip of me saying what I'm anxious about. The vast majority of them never see the light of day.

It works better than all the meditation, breathing exercises, and other tricks I've ever attempted.
