Every time I put an effort into losing weight (again), my body image plummets. It drives me nuts. And being thin isn't even my primary reason for losing weight; it's my health.

But, basically the second I lose weight i start noticing every roll of fat, every imperfection, and start to despair about how I look. <Grumble.

I do this too. It makes it so much harder. :( Can you change your focus to a different goal? Focus on just meeting exercise targets and completely ignore your body. Then maybe you could weigh or measure yourself only after like, four months or so.

I need to weigh myself on occasion to see if I'm making progress. I never even measured myself in the first place.
As for goals: the goal IS to improve my health, it's just that I think my brain connects weight loss to looks regardless. I also fear excess skin.

This is a pretty common sentiment; I hear it all the time from men and women regarding body image issues. Soon after people start a diet or a training regimen they get disappointed because they start being hypercritical and wanting results faster than they can attain them.

imo the best way to deal with this is just to work exercise into your daily routine (start biking to work or school, or walk places) so you're not as fixated on the end result but rather just following a routine.

Well, I'm currently somewhat limited in what I can do exercise wise. Mostly I'm just walking more. Also I don't have a daily routine (yeah, I know).

Get a cheap bike and a set of 5lb dumb bells (or 8lb ones or whatever feels slightly uncomfortable to lift). That'll give you a lot more options for exercise, and a lot more ways to incorporate it into your life without having to do anything special like make time to go to the gym.

Haha, I think you overestimate my budget if you think any bike counts as "cheap". I also do not have anywhere to put a bike (and it will inevitably get stolen if left outside). I do actually have barbells somewhere, but they might be a bit light.

Re: Complain here

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-04-05 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well my current bike wasn't cheap, but my old one was $40 on craigslist (and a piece of shit so it wasn't likely to get stolen).

If that's not cheap then I have no idea what is lol.

well, fair enough, if it actually still works for 40 bucks...the storage problem remains, though.

No way to just stick it in a hallway? That tended to be what people resorted to when I lived in an apartment with no bike storage area.

That would literally block the hallway. I had a fold-up bike (or how you call those) as a kid, but those are more expensive, and then i still had to go to the trouble of putting it in the basement every time (and the basement stairs are not something you do for fun).

lol dang. Well I have no idea how your situation works, but if you figure out a way to keep a cheap bike, then I'd recommend it. Biking is a good way to get in exercise without really feeling like you're doing it just to exercise.

I'll look into the price and logistics of it. Really a fold-up one is the only way to go (also because I want to transport it in my car to actually get to a nice place to drive a bike, if I do).

Re: Complain here

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-04-05 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hopefully it's an option. Bikes are marvellous for being able to take them out shopping to places you'd normally want the car for.

Re: Complain here

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2015-04-05 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's sort of the thing, though - I wouldn't use them for transport, just exercise. That's why I basically never put an effort in owning one.

There's no way I'm actually riding one in traffic, I do not wear clothes in daily life that suit bikes (I'd be willing to for exercise, but not to actually go to a store with, so shopping's out of the question) and I have a thing about getting wet. Like I REALLY REALLY have a thing about getting wet. And Belgium's rainy. This means that, if I'm out and it starts to rain, I can literally be stranded for hours, or would have to call someone to come and pick me up.

Basically, these are all the reasons I tend to dislike bikes. I only really see myself using one in a park on a sunny day.

Yes, I know I'm difficult. And I'm not trying to be contrarian - I know you're trying to help, but combined with the storing issue, and the fear of it getting stolen, the thought alone makes me uncomfortable.

Your needs are your needs; I'm not about to disagree with them.

I just hope you find something that works for you, because exercise is the best thing you can do for yourself to improve your body image while trying to lose weight, due to the large amounts of endorphins and dopamine that get released whenever you work out.

Whatever you decide on, do try to start exercising more, because there's a very good chance it will ameliorate a lot of your current problems.

Since you seem to know a bit about it - aside from the biking thing - do you know what kind of exercises or sports are useful but do NOT put too much stress on feet and legs, ankles specifically? Preferably stuff I can do on my own? As I said, I do have barbells - though not even sure what's the best exercise with them.

Re: Complain here

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-04-05 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Swimming, using an elliptical machine to run/walk (sometimes also acquired cheaply on craigslist), all types of barbell exercises for working the upper body (curls, shrugs, arm raised, tricep pulls, rows).

Deadlifts are probably the best exercise you can do for a total body workout, and they're generally not that harsh on your legs if you ease into them and only do a few at a time.

That said, I'm not sure exactly why you're avoiding putting stress on your legs. I'd have to know more to be able to tell you exactly what will be harmful and what won't.

Re: Complain here

Chronic tendinitis and ankle injury on the right, old knee injury on the left, take your pick. I am also born with joint hypermobility, so all my joints subluxate or dislocate (yes, all of them, though some more easily than others), and there's a whole set of sports I shouldn't technically do. But then, gaining muscle mass could stabilize them, so that's an argument for finding ways to do that. Even just walking for too long will make sure I will be in pain and limping the next day, though. The excess weight doesn't help, as you can imagine.

Re: Complain here

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-04-06 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, yeah, I would recommend deadlifts and other strength training for the legs on a very limited basis, then.

On the one hand, getting a better muscle base is useful for both losing weight and helping your tendinitis symptoms. On the other hand hypermobility and existing injuries make it dangerous to overdo it.

I'd say do a maximum of 1 set of 5 deadlifts every two days, and gradually work your way up to 10 if you find you can tolerate it. If that's manageable I think you'll find your weight loss efforts will go a lot faster and you'll find yourself able to do more in terms of other leg exercise.

dunno how useful this would be, but this man developed his own tai chi style that specifically goes easily on the ankles and feet:

http://www.williamccchen.com/

I started it from a book, and, while it certainly doesn't compare to the other types of exercise, I did notice that I gained a liiiittle bit of muscular tone on my arms and legs.

So, it could be a good start to get your blood circulating better and your body parts better oxygenated and eventually get ready for harder exercise?

ayrt

you're welcome!

there is another way it's helped me, personally: I've become way less clumsy! I have a better sense of balance now, I no longer bump into things as often, and I've found myself catching falling objects in the air automatically. And this all started while I was learning like the first 4 or 5 moves out of the sequence

(it takes me like 2 weeks to learn one move, but going slowly doesn't seem to matter)

(Sometimes it makes me feel like a ninja and that's pretty cool :3

(sorry for so many parentheses, I don't know what happened)
