Representation wank.

I. Just. Don't. Get. It.

Why do people DEMAND POC in shows made by white people in majority white nations?

It's just so bizarre to me.

If I want to watch Asians, I watch Korean/Japanese/Chinese cinema, anime and manga.

If I want Latino representation, there's TONS of stuff out there (like telenovelas for one) but there's also great works by Latino writers are artists.

And so on and so forth.

Just...it boggle my mind that people get so upset about white creators (who are writing for a primarily white audience) not including POC. I'm just like "why do you want to watch a side character when you could read about a POC in as the MAIN character who is also written BY a POC."

It's like asking for a cheap knock off and I don't get it.

You're damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The thing is, if we're talking movies (and in the US at least, where there may be a lot of white people but there's a lot of POC as well) Hollywood exports movies globally. That's a big deal, you can certainly change perceptions if you give a marginalized group a big enough platform. There's a reason people from all over try to make it big in Hollywood.

Yeah but my question is...why do people get upset at Hollywood?

It's in a majority white nation with majority white writers.

Instead, why not support and promote Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Indian/etc. producers? It's not like these nations don't produce A TON of media.

Plus, there ARE Asian-American creators -- why not support them instead?

I just don't understand why you'd advocate for a WHITE writer to include POC when you could go directly to the SOURCE instead and support majority-POC nations and content creators.

ESPECIALLY because POC are rarely the leads in white-produced media. If you support POC creators then you get MAIN CHARACTERS as POC.

I should have been clearer with that last sentence; POC go to Hollywood to try and write, produce, direct, and chances are they include people who look like them. Some of us were born and raised in the US, it's more plausible for me to go to Hollywood than to Ghana to produce a film.

That's not what I'm talking about though.

I'm talking about people who advocate for representation by wanting, say, Marvel to cast more POC and have POC led movies.

And I just can't help but think that they should support EXISTING POC writers and characters.

You can support what's there and want more, especially when it's skant. Marvel has a huge catalogue of comics and there are definitely non white superheroes they could have picked earlier than Guardians of all things, as much as I love it. Though I do say slightly better late than never.

Well, if they want to keep using contemporary New York City as a setting, white people are a minority according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Marvel has characters of color in canon. They can hire writers and directors who are POC. It isn't an either-or situation.

White is just barely the majority anymore, and especially not to the extent that Hollywood casts white people. White writers are a majority, yes, but that's a circular argument because it's a symptom of the problem.

Non-hispanic whites are still 63.7% of the population.

But, more to the point, because a lot of writers are white, that's who is handling the characters.

Instead of asking for white writers to include POC, why not support EXISTING Poc writers/producers (yes they exist!) and to tell POC stories?

It just makes so much more sense to me. Why support a knock-off when you could support the original (which is likely to be much better anyway)?

Because it's not an exclusively white nation, and non-Hispanic whites are expected to become a minority in a few decades. And depending on location, having an all-white cast is going to be unrealistic. I live in a city with an African-American majority, at least within city limits.

But we can walk and chew gum. We can also support more diverse casting and minority directors and creators.

No it's not exclusively white. But Hollywood is in the business of making money so it's gonna pander to the majority.

And, more to the point, if the writers are white, white is what they are most familiar with.

So instead of saying that people should have white writers awkwardly insert POC characters (usually in side roles), why not PROMOTE POC writers and their characters along with media from majority-POC nations?

I agree in some degree. I get why people want to see more non-White people (that are not stereotypes) in American media, especially in when set in areas that are very multi-cultural.

I think what I've seen of it on Tumblr though is quite hypocritical. Take Frozen, based on a Danish fairytale, which parts of Tumblr thought should have plenty of non-white minorities and the one minority they did have (Or sort of had with maybe Sami Kristoff) did not count at all as it was a white minority.

The rumoured (or is it confirmed?) Mulan live-action movie on the other hand, that should just have Chinese actors and not any other Asians as it is based on a Chinese story.

See, that's another issue as to why I don't get why people want white writers to tell POC stories.

If you're going to have white people tell this story, why are you getting upset that they want to use a Korean actress (for example) instead of a Chinese one?

Korea and China are literally right next to each other. That's like getting upset at Hollywood for casting a German person in a French person's role. Hollywood doesn't DO those kind of subtleties.

And it's not like China hasn't produced its own version of Mulan.

Yeah, wanting only Chinese actors is counterproductive. They're not going to be Chinese, they're going to be Americans (or Canadians or citizens of some other mostly English-speaking country) of Chinese descent. Hollywood has never been that picky about their white actors matching the heritage of the character they play, so closing all roles to other Asian actors would be another way to make it harder for POC than it is for white people to get roles. And that's the opposite of what these MUST BE CHINESE purists want.

If it was an ambiguous tale that roughly takes place on the continent, yeah, but Mulan is a Chinese legend and story. The closer they can cast, the better.

Based on a Danish fairytale, set in the early modern period at a time when Denmark made at least a token show of competing with France, England, the Netherlands, and Spain for African and Indian trade. Just pointing out that the token black person in a couple of crowd scenes isn't historically outrageous for a royal court of the time period.

There were some non-white background characters in the coronation ball scene, though. Which is why I never understood the wank.

Then you get the arguments that Elsa should be POC because she has magic.

The Frozen example you mention is one that bugs me - when people argue a setting where a white European majority does make sense and people still argue not only should there be more POCs, but major characters (like Elsa for example) should be POC only because she has magic and illogical racial inheritance doesn't apply when there's magic.

I support more diversity, but I still want it to make sense. Also, magic is not an excuse to stop making sense when it comes to the groundwork.

I never liked overly personal and harassing wank or vindictive trolling, especially when the target is being shamed for saying something years ago.

Now I'm pretty much a pro at avoiding stupid things I don't like, but dear god I hate site vs site wank. Jfc I get all the second-hand embarrassment for anyone basically claiming allegiance to a website they probably use adblock on. Like anons drawing up all the bait over a tumblr filename immediately shit up a good thread for me. I just. I just :(

I don't get it either. There's SO MUCH great stuff out there made by actual POC creators starring POC characters, but it's like no one cares about any of it because it's not popular. Popular media is the only thing that matters, apparently.
