Homages to the Deceased in Media

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So I just came back from Fast and the Furious 7 - I saw the first one like, whatever, over a decade ago but was dragged to see this one. I had pretty much no idea what was going on, but the Paul Walker tribute still managed to hit me in the gut.

Any homages to those who've past away that you find particularly touching?

The Talking Dead does a dedication to the newly dead characters each week at the end of the show. It's usually funny, but when they kill off an important character, it's really pulls at the heartstrings.

And shit, I just realized you were talking about dead actors, not dead characters.

Sorry, I've gotten two hours of sleep in the past two days; my brain is frazzled.

Uh, it wasn't IN the movie, but Heath Ledger winning all of those posthumous awards for his performance in The Dark Knight was probably one of the most touching things I've ever seen.

I cried. Not even a little ashamed. Paul Walker was a genuinely good human being, and I've seen every FF movie in theatres since the first one, even the bad ones.

It was the first time I've cried at a move in over 17 years, too.

There's any other KIND?

Yes! The first one was amazing as were the 3rd and 6th ones.

For movies that are so chock full of T&A they're also startlingly more likely to pass the Bechdel test than a lot of higher quality material.

Plus, uh, Michelle Rodriguez is mai waifu and Vin Diesel is mai husbando.

Oh my god that is a hilarious misunderstanding on my part.

I thought you mean the FANTASTIC FOUR movies. Lolz.

--Rogan

PS from Miranda: My goodness, if Vin Diesel were in a Fantastic Four movie, I might actually ENJOY one.

I have never seen a single Fantastic Four movie. I hope I never will.

Your loss, herp! I've seen all three and they are INCREDIBAD! Glorious delicious cheese!

I'm pretty sure the only way I could stand them would be with copious alcohol and the lovely shitstream crew to share my pain.

Rogan's an intellectual masochist who takes perverse pleasure in watching the most godawful movies he can find. It's why he loves Noodles' streams so much. WE, herpy, have TASTE.

I'd get along with Rogan then, as long as he agreed that we can only watch shitty horror movies. Otherwise, he'd better provide beer.

Hmmmm. I'm actually not sure I have many shitty horror movies. Best I can do is Wild Zero, which isn't shitty but AMAZING.

I have a terrible allergy to jump scares and gore, alas. Break out in hives and post-nasal drip.

If you've got crappy horror movies that somehow avoid either of those, though, I am all in! (I have... the American remake of the Grudge? Does that count?)

Not all horror is over the top gore or jump scares. A lot of horror comedy is pretty tame/cheesy.

Like, I'd wager if you're able to sit through your average big budget action flick you wouldn't be bothered by the amount of gore in say, Slither or What We Do In The Shadows.

Wild Zero is amazing and you have good taste.

(I have a Guitar Wolf shirt an artist friend on my dad made me.)

PICS? Tell me you have pics! Oh please! I really want to see that shirt! It must be rockin'!

(We actually made a short comic to be in the Wild Zero fanzine that lamentably went under. It is my favorite movie and I am so fucking excited to find someone else who likes it.)

Oh man. I'd have to dig around for pics. I'll get back to you on that. But! I should stream it one weekend and you should come! I haven't streamed in a long time.

There was a fanzine? Interesting.

I love the FF series and I'm going to see the new one on Friday. I wish I would've not been so opposed to them previously as I've only enjoyed their awesomeness since last year. (I did a marathon one weekend.)

I'm enjoying things I once scoffed at and it feels so good to let go of the unfounded hate, ya know?

Re: Homages to the Deceased in Media

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-04-16 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
That's just the thing right. Despite the gratuitous fan service there's nothing inherently bad or misogynist about the movies (except maybe the dialogue lol).

Hell, if anything over the years it's been joked that there's more homoerotic tension in those movies than anything else and that the T&A is only there to cover it up.

The truth is those films are responsible for employing more female stunt people/drivers than any other franchise and casting the likes of Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey at a time when even freaking Wonder Woman is still scared of making a realistic warrior woman character and other films prefer to stick to the usual slap fights rather than showcase true fighters.

I have nothing to add really, just that I've been a big fan of the Fast series since the first one and had a lot of affection for Paul Walker. (Or, you know, his public persona. And he seemed like a great human being, which made his death all the more sad.)

I did get behind on the series after Fast and Furious and when Paul died I was unsure if I wanted to catch up. These films have always been my go-to for when I need a bit of fun and cheering up, and I wasn't sure I could ever see them the same again.

Now that I've been hearing about how good Paul's (and Brian's) sendoff is, I do want to see it.

Re: Homages to the Deceased in Media

(Anonymous) 2015-04-16 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
The sendoff was really touching, especially since you know they're really talking about Paul Walker and not Brian. The rest of the film is classic dumb amazing stunts and ridiculous one-liners (as it should be!) but the tribute was a punch to the feelings.

That's about what I expected. I've seen the trailers where Dom talks about no matter how far apart they are, he and Brian will always be brothers. Ngl, I cried. (Especially since I thought back to Vin naming his newborn daughter after Paul.)
