(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)Though I'm with you on the "mainstream" thought doesn't have any thought that women might like slash in the same way. But then again, women liking porn at all is still a mostly unacknowledged thing.
still, with any close girlfriend if I've got that down-to-earth banter, I'll happily talk about liking gay porn.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)I think that's might be what OP meant. They say they want to have a normal conversation about it with non-fandom friends. Is that not the equivalent of hanging out privately with bros?
Bros are friends right?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)Anyway, I think it's about the type of friend. I have girl friends where we brag about how big our poops were, in those close, nothing's-sacred type friendships porn is definitely a possible topic. But then I have girl friends who we don't have that banter, doesn't mean we're not close, but it's not how our conversations work, so I wouldn't just bring up something like that.
So in short, I think it depends on the friend, but I'd wager this is true of guy friends, too. Though if I were to take an uneducated guess, I can see how "male youth culture" might be more encouraging to guys to talk about things like sex and porn with one another than it is for girls.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)To support the idea that it's very much something that depends on the people in question.
my porn convos with rl friends tend to suck and are never normal
I'm like the least prudish person, but really. If you wanna watch porn or talk about it, I'm game, but not out in public, please.
My online chats about porn go much better.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)You are entirely sensible and I don't understand why people are clutching their pearls about this. Gasp, how dare you say that this is socially acceptable? But OP wasn't saying it was -- just that guys liking girl-on-girl is more socially acceptable, which let's face it, it is. Nobody is suggesting that this become a topic for the dinner table (though depending on the family...).

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)No, it isn't. It might be less shocking, but it's certainly not more "acceptable".

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)Seriously, qualifiers change meanings. Saying one thing is more acceptable than another thing doesn't necessarily imply that it is, in fact, widely acceptable... because degrees. Otherwise we're just splitting hairs for no reason.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)Someone might be surprised if a woman said she liked gay porn, because it's not something that comes up often, but I seriously doubt that would illicit more social backlash than a guy who said he liked lesbian porn in the exact circumstances.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)You know Black Swan right? Has a make out and sex scene between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis -- TONS of guys were way into that and were in no way quiet about it. It was hugely mainstream.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)Literally nothing to do with the topic at hand.
And for what it's worth, I do remember that movie coming out, and I don't remember loads of guys publicly talking about how sexy lesbians are. And if they did, I reckon they earned plenty of dirty looks.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)(The reason we need to throw porn out of the conversation is because porn itself is still controversial and "shameful" regardless of who's watching it... but even then, people generally assume it to be a thing men do.)
