This strikes me as being a HUGE "depends where you're sitting, depends who you're talking to" thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, it is not socially acceptable for a guy to say he likes lesbian porn in almost any situation, besides maybe hanging out privately with his bros. Socially acceptable? I mean you know what that means, right?

Though I'm with you on the "mainstream" thought doesn't have any thought that women might like slash in the same way. But then again, women liking porn at all is still a mostly unacknowledged thing.

still, with any close girlfriend if I've got that down-to-earth banter, I'll happily talk about liking gay porn.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"besides maybe hanging out privately with his bros."

I think that's might be what OP meant. They say they want to have a normal conversation about it with non-fandom friends. Is that not the equivalent of hanging out privately with bros?

Bros are friends right?

This. I've never heard any guy talk about his love of lesbian porn in the middle of a family dinner.

But I have heard my female (and male) CLOSE friends talk about what kind of porn they enjoy.

+1. The only people I've met who chatted about what porn they liked were really young--older people are a little more private, at least offline.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I've noticed this too.

Almost every woman I talk to basically knows that lots of guys (though not all, of course) enjoy "lesbian" porn.

But every guy I've ever talked to is shocked, SHOCKED I SAY, that women might think two guys together is hot.

And I'm not even talking about real life here -- I mean guys I've talked to online (I post on imgur occasionally). The dudes I talk to are ALWAYS surprised that women are into gay porn or slash.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
that's a completely separate thing from "social acceptability". yes, the fact that dudes like porn is much more well known than the fact that women like porn (although that's changing) and the specifics of what that entails even more so. but that's a long shot from imagining that dudes are always talking about it publicly.

*waves* Hi. Straight cis guy here. Have known that women were into gay porn for at least, oh, two to three decades now. My response when I realized it was, as best I can remember, 'sure, that makes sense.'

Now you can drop the universal generalization! Isn't that great?

Oh, and I have very few friends I can confess even my love of non-explicit shoujo ai manga to. If anyone I knew in real life knew about that, I'd expect awkwardness and a tiny bit of scorn, at best.

I agree. Most of my female friends would probably be really weirded out if I told them I liked slash. I do find the acceptance of slash becoming more common in female geek circles though, which is cool.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it already is more socially acceptable, purely because slash isn't always porn, but gay and lesbian porn is always porn.

"I like reading romance stories with two guys in them" is way more acceptable to discuss than "I watched porn of any kind the other day" even if the porn is het

because, you know, porn. you don't discuss that in public

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

also, saying "I ship het and it's Bella/Edward" is already way more socially acceptable than "I want to see nasty vampiresex porn"

because. porn.

I tend to agree here. I mean, I have an r/l friend I can talk to about slash (well, and my bf obviously), but I noticed that it is in fact way more common for guys to imply or joke about liking girl-on-girl.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so let's say this secret didn't specify "lesbian porn" and instead just said "men say they like girl-on-girl". That's more comparable to slash anyway.

Come on, are we really going to pretend guys liking girl-on-girl isn't a widely acknowledged phenomenon? That it isn't so common that you see it as the butt of jokes, as throwaway gags in films and television? That if, say, over a couple of drinks a dude said he found the idea of two actresses making out hot, he'd probably get some shrugs and maybe even a hell yeah?

That said, women liking guy-on-guy is now also becoming a thing but we haven't caught up with men yet. So yeah, I'd say one thing is more acceptable than the other, by sheer virtue of ubiquity.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
This, exactly.

The fuck is this place, Fanfic Rants where we get hung on nitpicking one word? I got what she was saying just fine.

Yeah. I remember that back when I discovered slash (in high school), I told some close friends about it and several of them thought it was really weird. They weren't uncomfortable with the topic, by the way - we talked about a lot of sex-related things with no issue. They just thought it was weird liking to read fic about two guys.

I wonder if there are male fans who are in a 'eww, femslash' camp. I encountered a fandom for classic literature that is predominately anti-slash recently. With attitudes like - it's a recpectable community, of course we don't like slash. It has sock accounts made by secret slashers and much drama.
Porn sites are mostly geared for men, so you'll see lesbian porn there but if you want gay porn you'll have to go to separate sites. I was glad to see a few yaoi alongside tons of yuri, although with a note that it's a special ganre that some people will appreciate. Yeah, this people are women, lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
For all the people arguing "But it's not socially acceptable for guys!"

I have irrefutable proof. Have you heard about "Girls Gone Wild?"

Then congratulations, it's publicly accepted that men like lesbian porn. That's all that series is, drunken teen girls kissing each other. That's it. It's lesbian porn, and I say porn because I really doubt there's any argument people are watching it to learn these girl's hopes and aspirations and in hopes of a coherent plot to emerge. The series exists, is mainstream, is advertised on TV, because it's socially acceptable for guys to like that.

Does Boys Gone Wild even exist?

Guys in my classes have no shame in saying lesbian action turns them on. Anytime the topic comes up they would even say as much in class discussion. I've never seen people that casual about two guys getting it on.

Text: I wish it was as socially acceptable for women to say they like slash fic or art as it is for men to say they like lesbian porn. Hell, it’s often just assumed. I’m not ashamed of it in the least, but man the looks you get if you DO mention it.

It’s not even like I’m being pervy about it. It would just be nice to have a normal conversation about it with my non-fandom friends.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
You need new friends OP. Plenty of girls are just as willing to talk about porn as guys are. non-fandom women liking gay porn is DEFINITELY a thing.

"Socially acceptable" is really only context specific anyway, isn't it.
