I've noticed this too.

Almost every woman I talk to basically knows that lots of guys (though not all, of course) enjoy "lesbian" porn.

But every guy I've ever talked to is shocked, SHOCKED I SAY, that women might think two guys together is hot.

And I'm not even talking about real life here -- I mean guys I've talked to online (I post on imgur occasionally). The dudes I talk to are ALWAYS surprised that women are into gay porn or slash.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
that's a completely separate thing from "social acceptability". yes, the fact that dudes like porn is much more well known than the fact that women like porn (although that's changing) and the specifics of what that entails even more so. but that's a long shot from imagining that dudes are always talking about it publicly.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Where the hell are you getting it that OP wants to talk about it PUBLICLY?

OP just expresses desire for it to be AS socially acceptable for women to talk about slash as it is for men to talk about lesbian porn.

OP mentions "conversations with friends" -- not a family dinner with grandma or at the office

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Socially acceptable generally means accepted by the general public. Socially acceptable does not mean, "accepted by a tiny group of individuals in a certain setting."

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
But you're completely ignoring the qualifier -- "AS socially acceptable for women to talk about slash AS it is for men to talk about lesbian porn." That's it. It's not that men can talk about their love of lesbian porn anywhere and everywhere. But it STILL is more common and acceptable for men to discuss it than for women to talk about slash.

This is why, for example, most women know that a lot of men like lesbian porn whereas almost every guy I've ever talked to is clueless that women might like slash.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
da

no, OP flat out implied it was socially acceptable for men to talk about lesbian porn.

it's not.

in fact, I think it would be much more skeevy in 99.9% of possible social situations for a guy to talk about how he likes lesbian porn than for a woman to suddenly blurt that she likes gay porn.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Er...I think you just ASSUMED because that is NOT what I took from it.

OP just wants it to be AS socially acceptable for women to like slash as men like lesbian porn. And points out how, with men, it's so common that it's often presumed that they do.

They also say a "conversation with friends" so, again, I don't know why you're imagining that people are just blurting this out in any and every social situation.

Just because we know that a lot of men like lesbian porn doesn't mean we really ~accept~ it though. YMMV of course, but most people I know think it's kind of gross/perverted and/or low-key homophobic when a guy is into lesbian porn. These same people usually express the view that straight female slash fans are creepy fetishists, so.

socially acceptable means "accepted in a context with other people being there", BY a majority of people. It does not mean "by the general public, IN a public situation."
When I come out to my family, it still will play a big role how socially acceptable the idea of homosexuality is, even though I'm not standing in a public place, talking to strangers.
So shut up.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
well, that's how I would naturally take "socially acceptable"

that said, I would say, if they're talking about what they can talk about in private conversations with close friends, that would seem to me to be more down to the friend in question that anything else

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

OP said "socially acceptable". And then went on to talk about non-fandom friends... I have non-fandom friends that I talk about porn with? like, if we're talking about private friendships, it depends on the people? If we're not, we're talking about conversations between acquaintances in non-private situations, and then OP really has no idea what socially acceptable means.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Are you the anon fixated with social acceptability above? Because, guess what: it IS more socially accepted, and acknowledged. Men talk about it all over the non-porn oriented media, plus in social gatherings. Yes, publicly to the point it's a cliché. Yet whenever a woman mentions she too digs other kind of themes, people tend the look at her like she grew a second head. It's a clear fact, I don't know why your fixated in insisting otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, because only one weirdo could possibly disagree with you.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
DA

In this case? That's true.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
It looks to me like there are two social-acceptability!anons (one lowercase, one normal) plus one different anon who hopped in at the end of one of the subthread...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
*waves* Hi. Straight cis guy here. Have known that women were into gay porn for at least, oh, two to three decades now. My response when I realized it was, as best I can remember, 'sure, that makes sense.'

Now you can drop the universal generalization! Isn't that great?

Oh, and I have very few friends I can confess even my love of non-explicit shoujo ai manga to. If anyone I knew in real life knew about that, I'd expect awkwardness and a tiny bit of scorn, at best.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Patronizing git. Enjoy what you enjoy but quit *that* tone.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
That was patronizing?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
DA it was very, very patronizing.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
hi OP

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Patronizing, not really. Obnoxious, yes.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but lol you crazy, sis

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, this

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Somehow I don't think you're really a straight, cis guy.
