My experiences have largely been positive. They've been friendly and polite.

Now, don't get me started on the bourgeoisie...

My mother says the nice rich people are the ones whose families have been rich for generations. They think they're better than you, but they don't see that as your fault, so they're really polite about it. The self-made men and women are the ones who're really obnoxious, because they're insecure and need to keep "subtly" reminding you that they're better than you.

I find that to be true for the generational wealth people, aside from the occasional obnoxious bad apple. Even those tend to get smacked back into line when they go too far out because their money isn't their money, so to speak, and Daddy and Mommy can easily remind them of it.

Not all, but lots of self made people have this air of "if I can do it by getting exceptionally lucky or gaming the system, why can't you? Nobody works as hard as me" and it's way worse.

The brattiest rich kid I ever met had two parents who were away from home all the time. His parents would raise hell if they heard he got disciplined at school, but if they knew he was bullying other kids, they certainly didn't care. (In retrospect, I have no idea who raised him, and I've been told that multiple adults wondered that without an answer.)

That's more a failing of the parents than the child. Wealth doesn't have much to do with it. Any kid at any income level would act like that in that situation.

This. Neglect doesn't exactly do wonders for any child. Wealth probably gave him more of an entitled attitude than other children and made it easier for him to get out of trouble but, regardless of socioeconomic status, a lot of kids develop serious behavioral issues when their parents obviously don't truly give a shit about them.

I agree with that, but I don't think it's limited to self-made people. I think it's just a middle-class thing in general, even if they've been middle-class for generations.

The super rich are really insulated from us plebs; most of us in this thread have probably met one of the 1% a handful of times. They can afford to be gracious when they descend into our lives; they probably don't even recognize how broad the gap really is. They never have to look across it.

The middle-class though? They have to rub shoulders with us of the lower-class on a daily basis, so they have to constantly assert how their meager bit of chump change makes them superior.

That of course doesn't apply to the entire group; just the more obnoxious faction. The kind who think it's fine to threaten and cuss out cashiers (how DARE the lowly cashier waste their precious time and not have everything perfect for them?) blow stop signs (stop signs are for unimportant people, who don't have places to be) and talk about how they WOULD give money to that bum asking for a dollar, but he'd just use it to buy booze. Now let's spend $5 on a latte.

Yup. The super rich don't have anything to prove, they're already super rich. It can cut both ways: they can be obnoxious assholes because they don't have to care what people think, but they can also be the friendliest people because they have time and effort to spare and aren't afraid of being judged for who they associate with. When you have money, other people's opinions just matter less.

When people have something to prove, they tend to be super defensive at everything.

This is so true.

Yeah, this. I grew up upper middle class [and have since been in most of them ranging from homeless to middle]. Though, really, there's an obnoxious faction in every class I've found - and, sadly, the faction that'll cuss out cashiers, etc. also seems to exist in all of them. : /
