i thought those posts were just self-depreciating. in jest, you know. don't take it so seriously.

They are which is why I'm feeling some of what the op is saying. Like, the trash posts used to annoy me a lot more than they do now, because I get that self-deprecation can be fun. But, at the same time, embrace what you like and don't put your interests down. Like, I was this tempted to call myself shipper trash the other day because I'm feeling slightly weird about shipping this thing, but nah, you know what? Fuck it, im going to ship and have fun doing it and not feel weird about it because I think I should for whatever reason. Liking something that doesn't hurt anyone else doesn't make you trash.

DA. I could understand if OP finds it annoying in the way fandom can be annoying about everything... but the "you aren't allowed to be self deprecating" thing bothers me.

Having a Self Deprecating sense of humor is how I deal with things, it's how I deal with BAD THINGS and if I'm not allowed to laugh at myself then I probably won't survive for much longer.

Like if OP hates the word, whatever, JUST IGNORE IT THOUGH. You can't tell other people how to behave in this way. Telling people they can't make fun of themselves just crosses the line for me.

Mmm, yeah. I do enjoy self-deprecating humor (which is what I consider "trash" posts to be), so I see your point. Really, I'm in the middle on this one because I understand both sides.

But, self-deprecation can be used as a way to minimize your involvement in something to protect against internal and external flak like "you shouldn't enjoy this thing because of reasons," and that's part of what op takes issue with. I actually do that exact thing, but I don't call myself trash. (I think may be more the terminology than anything. Trash has very negative connotations and sounds rather childish.) It's not that people can't make fun of themselves, it's the blatant dismissal of the things they like because they feel they shouldn't be enjoying them. And that can be a damaging mindset, that your interests are not worthwhile because they are cheesy or low-budget or soap-operatic or cartoons or whatever.

I can't agree that it's always a blatant dismissal of something someone likes, especially since "trash" has caught on with fandom I've seen it used in a variety of contexts.

I still think it's a bit creepy to tell someone exactly how they are allowed to make fun of themselves. If it's a friend and it's something you're legitimately concerned about, that's one thing, but if someone is just dorking around fandom why is it any of OP's or anyone else's business how they have fun?

OP can easily learn to scroll, and like with anything in fandom, I'm sure the word "trash" will eventually become uncool and you won't see it as slang as much anymore.

"it's the blatant dismissal of the things they like because they feel they shouldn't be enjoying them"

If that's the context you've seen it in, then that's the context you've seen it in, but in my experience the people calling themselves Whatever-trash are some of the most vocal and proud fans of the thing they're calling trash.

For one of my fandoms where the phrase has caught on intensely, for the people using it (especially in terms of the ships they like) there's absolutely no dismissal involved. These are unequivocal fans of the thing they're calling trash. Some of them are BNFs for the fandom and the pairing and defend both passionately.

I wouldn't even say they use it in a self-depreciating context, at least not in terms of the medium/fandom/ship. They're vocal and proud of their likes. Rather, it seems like they're calling themselves trash humorously/ironically for being so affected by the thing they like (the same way people call the characters they love losers, assholes, bastards, etc. because they have such an impact on you), but I never get the sense that they're ashamed of liking it.

Ever since I saw a video of someone lovingly calling one of their kittens their "trash child, his life is nothing but garbage, but that's ok because he is a fluffy cloud." I sort of like the use as "I love this and it annoys me at the same time and it kind of annoys me how much I love it and I love how much it annoys me."

One of my cats is very much a trash child. Sometimes literally!
