Fandoms you keep meaning to check out but haven't

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-04-21 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any fandoms that you keep meaning to look into but then it just doesn't happen? Does anyone else have a list? I have a fairly long list of things that I want to watch at some point but just haven't yet.

Attack on Titan and Harry Potter. For AoT, I am just meh. For Harry Potter, I get overwhelmed by the amount of fic.

The easiest way to sort through Harry Potter is to pick a character and read through some of those stories. I know it's super overwhelming but I loved the fandom and only wish I knew where everyone hung out, besides tumblr.

I've tried. I picked Draco cuz he looked like a good woobie. But I can't seem to find any gen fics in the fandom. Eventually I would get into some kind of pairing, but I wanted to start with Gen fic.

I feel the same way about AoT. I've seen so much artwork from the series and all I can think is"...whatever." But it's this huge juggernaut, and everyone's raving about it, and... argh, dammit, I just don't have the time.

The thing that made me think I should watch was that my older sister liked it. SHE HATES ANIME!

I've been making my way through the the last airbender for like, the past four years. I like it a lot, I'm just really slow at watching tv :(

I feel like I should give Buffy and Firefly another try. I got into both as the fandoms were ending, but I also think I was in the wrong places. There's got to be some good fics/communities left.

House of Cards, Rescue Me, Parks and Rec, Sons of Anarchy, to name a few TV shows.

I also keep meaning to watch Princess Tutu.

Have you watched the original House of Cards? (Or do you mean the original?) If no, I 100% recommend it! Richardson is amazing levels of coldly and irredeemably evil as Urquhart, and the plots and the dialogue are brilliance itself (although I think what actually sold me on the series was this: http://edwinlandfill.tumblr.com/post/94904987533/). I like the UK version better than the new one, not least because the original Urquhart has honest-to-god political convictions and beliefs, rather than acting solely for his own benefit. And he just tricks a major part of the audience into kind of understanding him and sympathizing with some of his views, until the last scenes come.

Original House Of Cards (the U.K. version) from the early 1990s is much better than the Kevin Spacey remake. Rescue Me was awesome most of the time. Some episodes drag.

For fandoms, I can only think of MCU. I'm behind on the movies and I don't really want to wade through all the fic to find some good stuff.

But for just media, I have a TON of stuff I want to get to. Spooks, Teen Wolf, Agent Carter, Agents of SHIELD, Librarians, Dig, Dresden Files, all the comic books, Forever, Daredevil, etc. etc.

I don't keep a list (I should, I have enough for a long one!) but there is always something I want to read/watch/play that I don't have time for. Right now I'm about three to four episodes behind on all my currently airing shows (except Vikings and Bates Motel) so I should probably catch up on those instead of watching something new.

I would like to watch Daredevil though. (And more of Psych, and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and Orange is the New Black, and I would like to watch Breaking Bad but god knows if that will ever happen. My Netflix list is long...The Fall, The 100, Poirot, Longmire, Peaky Blinders, etc. I'll probably never watch half of this but I'd like to. And that's not even getting into games or comics... I'm so behind on comics and several Assassin's games.)

Breaking Bad and Orange Is the New Black are very good! I'm not even 1/2way through Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries so I won't comment (but I DO like the characters of Miss Fisher, her female doctor pal, and her maid).

I've heard so many good things about Breaking Bad (and Better Call Saul) that I do want to watch it, it just...hasn't happened.

And I actually did watch the first season of OITNB and thought it was fantastic! I started on season two but didn't finish it. :/ Need to get back to it.

I've also seen a couple episodes of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and they've been good so far! Miss Fisher is just my kind of character, and her doc pal is perfect. I love her style and her personality is a breath of fresh air. The setting and costumes are lovely.)

Sports animanga. I'd like to get back into anime and have animanga fandoms that are actually active with a lot of fic and fansrt. Unfortunately, I don't think they'd be up my alley. I don't really care about the power of friendship, how everything can be solved with friendship, training bullshit, the sports themselves, etc. But they are what is hot atm.

As someone who doesn't keep up with anime/manga much anymore and has made an effort to do so for sports animanga (a few, anyway), I have to say if you don't care about the power of friendship...they are probably not worth it. To me that's what sports anime/manga is all about.

Also each game/match can last several episodes (or chapters) so they move very slowly and a lot of time is spent on each teams reaction to the current game. Depending on the anime/manga, there can be lots of ridiculous and unnecessary talking during games. In Kuroko no Basuke I swear sometimes the characters will stop to have a little chat with their teammates and they somehow have time for what seems like five minute introspectives and can magically hear people talking from the top of the stadium. You can't take them too seriously.

As someone who has never had a real interest in sports (only casually, when playing them myself), cute characters and their relationships is about the only thing that could make me care.

Maybe just...browse the fanart anyway? The fanfic is mostly terrible, tbh.

Re: Fandoms you keep meaning to check out but haven't

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they probably aren't for me, but unfortunately for me, those are the animanga fandoms big on tumblr and when it comes to western anime fandoms.

I got nothing against friendship and series focused on that, but these series tend to take it too far for me. And if they had something going for them besides that and sports, I'd be more interested.

Probably just check out the fanart.

I feel like sports anime to me is more about the comedy gold than the friendship/brotp, but that's just my wacky perspective. That, and it's usually a break anime from my usual line up of psychological and fighting shonen. Though, I'll admit I usually get into sports anime much more and for the long haul compared to other animes where I like them for a season or two and then it kind of disappears from my likes.

IA Matches can go on forever. I think worst than the magical game time talks is the sports anime where they constantly have to remind you via flashbacks what happened an episode or five minutes ago.

Also it's really weird to say, but I like when I see your Kuroko and Haikyuu icons show up on FS. Sports anime rep in FS!

Also to OP, don't necessarily think a sports anime will be popular for the long haul. Some of them like Kuroko are, but a lot of them fizzle out too. I'll just go weep in the corner about the very small selection of Oofuri fandom there is left.

Oh man, I have a sport anime feelings today...

Steven Universe, in spite of the fandom currently. I've seen a few episodes here and there, and it's a really cute show (and I lurk in /sug/ mostly for the art that gets posted), but I just can't bring myself to devote the time to binge watch the show. Plus, after having the last few cartoons I've gotten into crap out on me spectacularly (Green Lantern TAS, Nickelodeon*TMNT, and Star Wars Rebels), I'm really leery about getting too invested in a new cartoon series.

Thunderbirds are Go, for the above reason (just can't motivate myself to sit down and watch), though it does look really cool.

Psych, Parks and Rec, and Gilmore Girls (don't laugh, I only want to watch it for Sean Gunn's character, Kirk). The former two are really highly recommended by some of my dearest friends, and in regards to Psych, I mostly want to watch it for (pre-beard) Timothy Omundson, 'cause I really liked him as Aric Jorgan in 'The Old Republic'. But I've always had a difficult time getting into live-action television shows in general, so it's a huge uphill battle for me. Plus, live-action shows go on for so many seasons and I only have the time/patience for so little. :T

A bunch of video games, though a lot of them are due to the fact I still don't have an Xbox One or PS4 yet.

Well I have actually lightly prodded at Mass Effect fics in the last month or so, but I am starting to think I should seriously consider getting and playing the games. They may be sci-fi instead of fantasy, but they're Bioware and I know Bioware is good.

The real worry however is that if I get the games, they might end up in the same pit of "I have them but I can't get up the desire to play them" that Morrowind, The Witcher and my replay of DA:O have fallen into.

Agent Carter, Happy Valley, Marco Polo, The Borgias (Showtime version), The Tudors, Peaky Blinders, This Is England (TV series based on film), and I have to get back into Scandal after missing a whole season.
