Re: Unleash your anxieties here!

I may have been exposed to pinworms long enough ago that they would have definitely hatched and started being all wormy in my guts by now but I haven't been able to afford to go to the doctor* before. I'm planning to make an appointment for next week but I don't know how much the testing will cost and that worries me. But not as much as the thought that I MIGHT HAVE WORMS.

*please refrain from yelling at me about how terrible the US health care system is, that is not my fault and you scolding me about it won't help matters

If we're talking about the same type of worms (human intestinal), you might be able to get over the counter treatment without going to the doctor?

They're pretty common, and your pharmacist could give you some information about them. The treatment is usually pretty basic, and you wash your sheets and clothes and vacuum, take care not to shake things out because the eggs can be breathed in apparently.

That's what I did last year when my infected godson stuck his unwashed hand in my mouth and laughed at me for spluttering. Humans are gross. Worms are gross. :/

See the thing is I don't KNOW that I have them, just that I unknowingly did housecleaning in a house where people apparently had them (saw a bottle of pinworm medicine in the bathroom after I'd already been cleaning for 2 hours.) So I don't want to just try and get medication without KNOWING that I have them. I might not. Chances are I probably do but I want to know for sure.

They probably won't test you anyway? I'm sorry if that's going to cause you more anxiety, but the only test a GP would do is the tape test, and that would have to have a follow up visit, because it needs to be done in the morning, and it can easily give a false negative. Faecal testing isn't accurate, and the easiest one for small children is looking with a torch in the middle of the night, but you probably don't want people looking at your butt while you sleep.

Most likely they would send you to the pharmacy.

Anyway, it's a very common OTC medication, and some people choose to take it once a year as a precaution.

I know it's completely disgusting to think about, but worms are very common and usually very easy to treat. They fall in the "please god nooooo" category of things like head lice, fungal infections, and cold sores. I'd say everyone has to deal with stuff they'd rather not think about at least once.

I know a lot of people shudder at the thought, but why not try and find a free clinic? I know in some big cities there are not crazy wait times, and it's a come in first come first serve basis once a week. I'd be worth checking it out.

Maybe also try calling a few pharmacies and asking? Sometimes some of them know nothing, but others do. Maybe they could give you a quick fix or tell you what to do?

I don't live anywhere near a free clinic...the doctor I go to is actually two towns over from me. Also I don't want to try getting on medication without being sure I have them. What happened was I did housecleaning in a house where 2 hours into cleaning I saw a bottle of pinworm medication on the bathroom counter, so I KNOW I was exposed but I don't know that I picked them up though I probably did.

Have you called around to clinics? Some aren't "free" clinics but they're pretty reduced. There's one in my town that's $20 if your income is around 1k a month, and you get 2 free labs with it.

It was a bitch to find out about though--in some areas, including mine, they like to keep them hidden.

Tbh if you contracted them through work, I'd go back on your boss about it. Though I wouldn't mention you saw the meds, she'd probably fire you under the ground of snooping or make up something else later to fire you for, just that you got sick and you're sure it was contracted on the job.

My mom used to work in house keeping so I understand how gross it can be from the stories she's told me.

Did the house in question have cats or dogs? Do they keep the place clean of the liter or is fecal matter strewn around? Do you have to clean areas where the animals have been? Is the place relavativly tidy, or are they very unclean? Or is it possible someone there contracted it from someone else or a animal offsite? If they don't have animals there I wouldn't worry as much.

Though if I were you I'd invest in throw away gloves and wear them in layers for protection. If you could afford it I'd also get those shoe protectors too, and not wear clothing that drags. And be prepared to take clothes off at the door and bag them if you can't wash them, or at least dry them.

My mom was FOREVER dragging stuff home, so this is the essential stuff we did.

My sister works in a kindergarten and when they had an outbreak of pinworms they really just suggested that everyone (as in all the kids, adults and everyone living with them) should take the meds just in case, and as I lived with her at the time I had to take them too. We have no idea whether any of us actually had it, and if I remember correctly, only kids below a certain age had to see the doctor.

So honestly, if the meds doesn't cost too much, I would just try them out without seeing the doctor.
