Oddly, even though I had some real problems with Star Trek, considering the people he brought back for this one (Namely writer wise) I've got a lot better feeling about this.

And really op, we shit on the prequels because THEY WERE SHIT.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you watched The Phantom Edit? A bunch of fans basically edited the entire prequel trilogy into a single coherent and watchable movie. https://youtu.be/LhJA7I_8-14

OP

"we shit on the prequels because THEY WERE SHIT"

I respect that other people have different opinions but it's been almost 10 YEARS since Revenge of the Sith was released. Can't people just let it go?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not how it works. New fans come into the fandom all the time, and when they bring up how much they hate the prequels, of course we older fans will agree with them and talk to them about it, not ignore them.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
What I've noticed, though, is that new fans generally don't have the same frothing hatred of the PT as the OT fans. They might think the PT isn't as good or even like large portions of it.

But the OT fans keep bringing up Episode VII again and again and again about how it's going to right all the wrongs of the PT.

And it's impossible to get excited about something when it's constantly coupled with shitting on something I love.

TBH, even setting aside anyone's opinion of the PT, that level of blind optimism just seems... stupid. And a pretty dumb reason to get anticipated for something new.

Star Wars fans...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really confused about how anyone can "love" the prequels but I'd like you to get me to see it from your point of view.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
?

I think they're wonderful counterpoints to the OT and enhance the story.

OT = story of justified, band of brothers rebels throwing off authoritarian empire

PT = story of manufactured political war with apathetic citizenry with mass produced armies occurring at the behest of politicians and corporate interests

OT = friends, forged through battle and sacrifice and idealism

PT = cloistered order of arrogant monks

And so on and so forth. I think the contrasts and the parallels between the PT and the OT really give them a greater depth.

I prefer the prequels. I'm not a big SW fan in general though. But the prequels have more action that I actually like (I find spaceship battles to be incredibly boring and the prequels had much better light sabre choreography and other fight scenes that I actually enjoyed). I also find Han Solo really annoying but I'm fine with Anakin and his awkward romance with Padme that's supposed to be awkward (whereas I'm supposed to like Han Solo and root for him and Leia). Plus I like politics.

Older OT fans who saw the OT in theaters and/or were fans of Star Wars before the prequels ever came out had a very different experience -- I'm sure the disappointment and dashed expectations were a lot more anger-inducing for them than for fans who got into Star Wars when they already knew, from pop-cultural osmosis, roughly what the prequels were about and that they weren't that good.

So the older fans who got into SW before the prequels came out have a bigger grudge against the prequels on principle -- because they have the memory of that crushing disappointment and having to jettison tons and tons of fanon about Vader's character and general SW backstory, whereas newer fans (like me) are just like "yeah, whatever, so the prequels are meh, who cares?" The frothing hate is irrational and OTT, yes, but sorta understandable.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"The frothing hate is irrational and OTT, yes, but sorta understandable."

It's just that it's been TEN YEARS.

And...okay...I just really hate that they keep shitting on my generation's movies (the PT). I was kid when they were released and yet the conversation is dominated by their (the OT fans) angry bullshit.

And now with the sequel trilogy, they're STILL acting like they're "owed" them because the PT were "failures" and it's such CRAP. They act like the movies belong to them and it drives me bonkers because they talk over everyone else.

Midichlorians. Just the word alone is enough to cause a firestorm of rage to sweep through me.

Most people hate the same things now that they hated 10 years ago. Time doesn't make everything better.

That said, I think with time passing more people have been willing to acknowledge that there are good parts about the PT.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. To be specific, three good parts.

1. Duel of the Fates. Great song.
2. The Podracer video game. Not the terrible movie sequence. The game ruled.
3. Natalie Portman's acting career. She's been good.

Aside from that, there's nothing worth keeping. Which is fine - I just ignore them. In my head, Star Wars is a single trilogy with a bunch of avoidable fanfic.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2015-04-24 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to presume you haven't seen 'The Clone Wars' (and if you have, feel free to ignore), because for all that show's faults (namely, the first couple seasons where they were trying to find the balance between 'this is a kid's show' and 'catering to the grown up fans' and it shows, bad), you gotta admit it tried/did its best to fix a lot of the mistakes the prequels made, namely, in regards to Anakin Skywalker's characterization. I mean, hell, their take on Anakin was far more convincing than that of Hayden Christensen's take, and after watching everything up until the bitter end, you could def. see what influenced his fall to the Dark Side. That show made me genuinely believe that was the man who became Darth Vader.

It also proved that Lucas' ideas and concepts are usually better when filtered/interpreted by other people who know what the hell they're doing, too. Dave Filoni -and all the writers and directors involved on the show- deserves at least some credit for doing what many thought was impossible and actually making the Prequels cool. I mean, even Simon Pegg liked the show and even did a guest role as a younger Dengaar. That speaks for itself.

Oh I rather liked Clone Wars (Dem orange butt cheeks)! But Clone Wars being good doesn't make the movies not be shit. Taken on their own, the movies are shit no matter what the Clone wars fixed.

You think they were shit, you mean.

And this is the problem. Prequel haters talk as if their opinion is fact and as if everyone hated them.

it's been 14 years. 'bout time for a kick up the ass.

What?

What needs a kick up the ass?

What in the world are you talking about?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-04-25 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Kasdan wrote the best two movies in the franchise. I suspect that Wars is a better vehicle than Trek for Abrams given Lost, Fringe, and Super 8.
