Oddly, even though I had some real problems with Star Trek, considering the people he brought back for this one (Namely writer wise) I've got a lot better feeling about this.

And really op, we shit on the prequels because THEY WERE SHIT.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you watched The Phantom Edit? A bunch of fans basically edited the entire prequel trilogy into a single coherent and watchable movie. https://youtu.be/LhJA7I_8-14

OP

"we shit on the prequels because THEY WERE SHIT"

I respect that other people have different opinions but it's been almost 10 YEARS since Revenge of the Sith was released. Can't people just let it go?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not how it works. New fans come into the fandom all the time, and when they bring up how much they hate the prequels, of course we older fans will agree with them and talk to them about it, not ignore them.

I'm going to presume you haven't seen 'The Clone Wars' (and if you have, feel free to ignore), because for all that show's faults (namely, the first couple seasons where they were trying to find the balance between 'this is a kid's show' and 'catering to the grown up fans' and it shows, bad), you gotta admit it tried/did its best to fix a lot of the mistakes the prequels made, namely, in regards to Anakin Skywalker's characterization. I mean, hell, their take on Anakin was far more convincing than that of Hayden Christensen's take, and after watching everything up until the bitter end, you could def. see what influenced his fall to the Dark Side. That show made me genuinely believe that was the man who became Darth Vader.

It also proved that Lucas' ideas and concepts are usually better when filtered/interpreted by other people who know what the hell they're doing, too. Dave Filoni -and all the writers and directors involved on the show- deserves at least some credit for doing what many thought was impossible and actually making the Prequels cool. I mean, even Simon Pegg liked the show and even did a guest role as a younger Dengaar. That speaks for itself.

And this is the problem. Prequel haters talk as if their opinion is fact and as if everyone hated them.

Kasdan wrote the best two movies in the franchise. I suspect that Wars is a better vehicle than Trek for Abrams given Lost, Fringe, and Super 8.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You gotta remember though that Star Wars fans were excited about the Prequels too. I wouldn't take the excitement now as meaning anything.

And a lot of trekkies hate JJ Abrams and have since the first film. I'm sure love or hate the film you'll find people who will agree with you.

Often you just have to wait until the hype dies down, I've hated a lot of hugely popular movies and you feel alone for a while and then in a few months everyone who hated it comes out.

Eeee'yup. Give it a few months to a year, and then everyone and their dog will take turns shitting on it and calling it one of the worst Star Wars movies since the Prequels. Because that's just how a fair (vocal) majority of Star Wars fandom is.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I hate JJ with the best of them for what he did to Star Trek. However it is clear he was always into Star Wars and was just touching the Trek franchise in dirty ways that it would have to point to on a doll to describe, so I'm not totally upset with him taking over the SW franchise. It is where his heart lies. Also he reportedly had a miserable time as someone from Disney was almost literally looking over his shoulder the entire time and kept stepping on a lot of his more outrageous stuff. If only Trek owners had done the same.

As for the prequel trilogy, eh, it was uneven OP, sorry. There was some okay stuff, but on the whole I do want JJ's attempt to be better.
intrigueing: (harley quinn wants you to put on a happy)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2015-04-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! The reason Star Trek was so godawful was because JJ wanted it to be Star Wars. And that didn't work at all, because Star Trek is nothing remotely like Star Wars in any way except for, y'know, the spaceships and future-tech and stuff.

Hell, the fact that he did Star Trek so badly is a big reason why I feel confident that his take on Star Wars will be better.

Also this:

"However it is clear he was always into Star Wars and was just touching the Trek franchise in dirty ways that it would have to point to on a doll to describe"

LMAO. :D

Eh, I kind of know where you're coming from even if we do disagree on the prequels. it's just really hard for me to get excited about the new trilogy, in part because of JJ, in part because of my feelings about Star Wars in general, and it's always so awkward being the one person who's like "Yeah, that looks okay, I guess" whenever everyone else is cheering loudly.

OP

See, I don't mind people getting excited about it. I'm trying to keep my expectations low because of JJ but I don't WANT it to be bad.

But good lord is it hard to get excited when people seem incapable of expressing that excitement without getting their hate on for the PT.

I'm a Zelda fan too, and Zelda fans are notoriously critical, but it'd get exhausting if people were endlessly and CONSTANTLY crapping on Skyward Sword in the run-up to the release of the next Zelda game. I had problems with that game too, but I still like it and it would honestly get old really fast to have it torn apart all the time.

First ST movie was awesome, sucks to be you. STID, was so-so with a shitty ending and some good moments.

I love the prequels and the originals and I'm excited for this. Because JJ got what he wanted. Star Trek was jis testing ground, unfortunately.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny because I LOATHE the first Star Trek movie.

The second's okay if I ignore all the racism and sexism. It's kind of like a half-baked fanfic but not as annoying as the first film.

JJ is just so UNINSPIRED as a filmmaker. He's competent but he has no cinematic vision. In anything I've seen from him.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Agree with you on the first ST film. Loved it! And was so so disappointed by the second one.

Which is what makes me wary about him taking on SW. Do we get the good JJ or the bad JJ? No one will know for sure until we get there.

They went back to Tatooine, and it's by Abrams. Of course it'll be dumb. He can throw millions of dollars at Ford, Fisher, and Hamill to show up, but that won't save it.

Spoilerish?

The desert planet in the trailer isn't Tatooine. It's a planet called Jakku.

Txt: I want to be excited about Episode VII. But I just can’t… it makes me so bitter that Original Trilogy fnas are already using this movie as a reason to shit on the Prequels fans (as though they haven’t done that enough for the past DECADE. That and I LOATHE what JJ abrams did with Star Trek, but everyone else LOVED the first movie. So I know Episode VII’s going to be well reviewed but there’s a good chance I won’t like it band will be alienated even more from the fandom

Secret because…cry moar OP Life doesn’t revolve around you.

Sorry.

Okay, I saw A New Hope as a child – they were releasing The Empire Strikes Back, so they showed A New Hope in theaters again. It was 1980 and I was five and the universe opened up. I became aware of the existence of the universe and what imagination could do. So, yeah, nothing was ever really going to compare to that experience. (For people who were older, the experience was different – the 70s in the US was not a good time, the Vietnam War, Watergate, the oil crisis, people were very bitter and this escapist, hopeful film came along.)

Then the mythology built on itself through the original trilogy and people went to see them again and again. And then sixteen years passed, giving people a lot of time to come up with their own theories and for things to become entrenched.

The prequels had a lot to live up to. And they didn’t, for me. I don’t hate them, but I don’t think they were very well done. They were too specific about some things (the Force, the Jedi, etc.) – mysterious really works well for certain concepts. They made the Jedi dicks. They retconned stuff from the original trilogy. They rendered some of the decisions regarding Luke and Leia unspeakably stupid (which I guess was okay since neither Darth Vader nor the Emperor ever wondered why there was a boy with the last name Skywalker living on the planet where Anakin grew up or why Anakin’s droids ended up where they did). They made Anakin a child killer (so I cannot reconcile that with the end of Return of the Jedi).

All that said, I'm not sure I care about the new movies. But rest assured, they will piss somebody off.

Re: Sorry.

"They rendered some of the decisions regarding Luke and Leia unspeakably stupid (which I guess was okay since neither Darth Vader nor the Emperor ever wondered why there was a boy with the last name Skywalker living on the planet where Anakin grew up or why Anakin’s droids ended up where they did). See, I thought that the prequels FIXED the whole Luke and Leia issue because Anakin thinks they're dead. He has NO REASON to ever go and look for Luke and Tatooine is a backwater that the Empire doesn't really give a shit about (Luke even says that everything is so far from here). And given that Anakin's mother died on Tatooine, I have little doubt he would have avoided it like the plague.

I'm not sure what the issue is with the droids, though? They look like regular droids and C3PO's memory was even wiped at the end of the prequels.

I kind of don't get the issue of Anakin being a child killer either. He readily participated in the destruction of Alderaan (hell, he was the one holding Leia) and millions of children were on that planet. Even if he wasn't the one holding the lightsaber in that case, I don't see how it's any less awful from a moral standpoint than what he did to the Jedi kids. At least with the Jedi, you can argue that he might have had a "good of the many outweighs the good of the few" motive -- wherein he saw their loss as necessary sacrifices to ending the war.

I'm with you, I was in high school in 1977, and Star Wars really did open the universe up for us. We went to see it over and over in the cinema. Which is something that has changed these days. We had no means of watching it any other way, VHS didn't even exist.

I felt crushing disappointment at the prequels. More than anything they were just silly. I think Jar Jar Binks was unforgivable, and it was clear the actors just weren't into it, no chemistry at all.

I am hopeful about the new film, but also worried.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 09:11 am (UTC)(link)

I like JJ and what he did with trek especially the first movie. Idk if his star wars will be as critically acclaimed as star trek was, though, but disney obviously hopes that and hired him for that reason. The good thing with sw is that he's a writer too (he's better as a writer than director) but idk, I feel like the movie is overrated already. I'm confident it won't be shit but at the same time I'm not sure about what these movies can add both to the genre currently (the trek reboot and guardians of the galaxy are successful already) and star wars. They are messing up with fans' headcanons too because they ignore the eu.
