(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)I expect the National Guard will be in soon to bust heads. This isn't a protest at all (the family asked for no protests). It is a bunch of assholes taking advantage of being anonymous to loot and attack people (6 officers injured, one unresponsive, reports of arrests because a group of 6 teens were beating a homeless man).

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 08:28 am (UTC)(link)But the people who are actually harmed by it aren't the crooked cops and racist politicians of the world. They tend to get off b/c there's rarely enough evidence for a conviction (or the case isn't as clear-cut as the news tried to spin it).
It's the people who actually live in these communities that are harmed by rioting. The people who own the small local businesses. The people who own houses or property that are now worthless. The people who are now unemployed b/c every business either went bankrupt immediately or is leaving as fast as they can. The people who are going to loose access to medical care or fire protection as infrastructure becomes unavailable or shuts down completely. It just helps perpetuate the cycle of poverty that these black communities are struggling to break out of, as all these black people lose their jobs or their companies or their financial security.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)That doesn't mean there are no real grievances, or that there aren't people who are (or were until recently) legitimately protesting.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)I can't speak for the OP, but I know there were real grievances. I also know there were legitimate peaceful protests. This is not about Freddie Gray anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)That said, to some extent, the protests were never just about Freddie Gray in the sense that every protest is about the whole historical and social and economic context, and also about whatever motives each individual person in the crowd has in mind. And I also have trouble tracing the boundaries between anger at society, and sheer maliciousness.
I don't know. I just feel like there's this weird narrative where the rightness of someone's cause is held to be determined by the peacefulness of the ends which they use to attempt to attain it. And I don't agree with that.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)I don't actually think that's the right narrative to use at the moment because holding up the above example, or the looting as part of a righteous cause is...well. Wrong. Those things aren't about a cause beyond maliciousness.

Some people just want to watch the world burn. Or a house.no subject
